Top Star Yoo-Baek writer is Back with Extraordinary You director in Cute Romantic Comedy, True Beauty

Korean Romantic Comedy in High School True Beauty based on webtoon

True Beauty is a new cute Korean romantic-comedy set in high school and starring Moon Ga-young, a cheerful and optimistic high school student who is insecure about her skin and overall appearance so she uses makeup to cover it up. Though, she overdoes her makeup, layering it on to hide her true self underneath. She’s determined (determined!) to never show her bare face to the world otherwise they will see how horrible her skin really is. She meets Cha Eun-woo, who has secrets of his own so they start to share their secrets with each other.

This romantic-comedy is based on hit webtoon also titled True Beauty (in English or The Goddess that Came to Earth in Korean (you can read it in English on Webtoons). In the spirit of adaptations, the webtoon artist, Yaongyi, recreated the drama poster with her own cartoon version (see below).

True Beauty will be adapted to the screen by Li Si-wun who was a writer on Top Star Yoo Baek and directed by Kim Sang-hyub who directed Extraordinary You. I did not get a chance to watch Top Star Yoo-baek, though I did look at all the photos released and loved every one of them. Perhaps it was the seaside vibe coupled with bright layered clothing all attached to adorable people? I’m going with yes. I did get a chance to watch Extraordinary You which absoultely captivated me from the first minute. Though, Extraordinary You fell apart in the end (seriously, it literally fell apart), the first 6-8 episodes were extra-wonderful.

So I have hopes for this drama! It has good visuals coupled with a strong genre that is backboned by a hit webcomic. I love a good ugly duckling story and in this case they actually did make Moon Ga-young look like an ugly duckling. She doesn’t just have glasses and a ponytail, she also has hyper sensitive and inflamed skin to go along with it. So, um, does that mean that in the drama, someone slipped her that 10 step Korean face care system to make her skin perfect and glowing? Can they slip it to me as well?

If this is the show for you then you only have one more month to wait because True Beauty will air this coming December 9th on tvN.
