Recap: Vincenzo (Episode 8)

This episode will be very easy to recap because it was also a lot of filler. So if you love filler, then you will love this episode.

VINCENZO RECAP EPISODE 8

We open with the rumble with the recreation of the Liberty Leading the People painting by the tenants and thugs. Vincenzo and Cha-young are both lost for words at the sight before them. They all go to the police station were the thugs try and blame everything on the tenants, but Vincenzo has the restaurant ajumma’s son there who shows the recording.

This recording leads the tenants to being internet famous. They get interviewed at their building and everything. This puts a wrench in any plans to demolish the building now that the tenants are famous. The tenants think this is great because they can try and find the gold in the building now. Though they do not work together to do this, each one basically goes about to finding it on their own (everyone except the monks it seems).

But that is not the big story of this episode. This episode is all about destroying Babel. babel meets with the Vincenzo team to come up with an agreement since they lost the case. They mostly talk about destroying each other at this meeting.

Babel decides to sign with the #1 bank in Korea in order to secure an investment. They want the #1 bank to sign with them so that other banks will give them money. This #1 bank does not have to give them any money later.

We find out that Vincenzo’s mother only has a few days left to live. The reason she is in the predicament to begin with is because of the #1 bank’s family. This is the family that the mother worked for. Vincenzo wants to ruin this bank deal.

In order to ruin that deal, Cha-young thinks that Vincenzo should try and seduce the Bank owner’s son. Vincenzo is against this for multiple reasons. Mostly because his mother is in jail due to the bank’s family though the owner’s son is also a despicable person who beats up the men he dates and doesn’t like people in general. It comes out that the son is really just socially awkward and his mother actually runs everything.

Vincenzo starts the job of seducing the son by meeting him at a horse riding rink and then going out for drinks later. Vincenzo is trying his hardest to seduce the son but is actually not doing his hardest and would rather not be there. That is until the son mentions Vincenzo’s mother (his maid) and how the mother didn’t actually kill his father. The mother pushed the father away but the father fell and couldn’t get back up. His mother watched all this from the door and left the father on the floor until he died.

Vincenzo is reinvigorated in the seduction by this and asks the bank owner out on a date at an amusement park. While at the amusement park Vincenzo finds out that the bank owner’s son is clinically terrified of zombies. Vincenzo also tells him that he found out his bank is going to sign a contract with Babel and that is horrible since Babel is a bad company. He breaks up with him over this.

At the signing ceremony of the Bank and Babel, the son decides not to sign the contract (Vincenzo is in the crowd to remind him of what he will miss out on if he does sign). But, the mother comes in and signs for him. Choi Myung-hee actually thought something like this would happen and invited the mother just in case.

But, as the son leaves, he is kidnapped by three tenants who are dressed as security officers and forced into a room in the building. The other tenants pretend to be zombies and scare the living daylights out of him.

He runs out, and runs in front of all the security people who are in the large open area of the building. There he finds out that Vincenzo is actually the lawyers on the opposing team. So the son is publically humiliated and lead away by the police.

Myung-hee tells Cha-young that she needs to watch out or she will end up just like her father. Cha-young calls all the reporters to her side and tells them that she is the daughter of the lawyer that died defending people from Babel. She will fight to the end to find out every little corruption that Babel has.

Her and Vincenzo walk with slow motion confidence.

COMMENTS

Okay, something just didn’t work for me this episode. I should have felt happy that the bank owner got what was coming to him, but I actually felt kind of sad about it? Almost like, um, maybe there could have been another way? It could be that the actor who played the bank owner had such innocent and sad faces throughout the episode to pull my sympathies, but I also think it was the delivery.

For one, in today’s climate, I don’t really like that the gay person had to be this evil person that they had to take down, publicly shame, and humiliate – especially when it appeared that his mother was the real ruthless person in the bank and is the reason that Vincenzo’s mother is in the predicament that she is in. Also, why would a person fall head over heels in love with someone that they just met? That is not how things work and feels like a bad stereotype of same sex relationships to me. With how quickly he fell for Vincenzo, along with his social issues, made the bank owner appear to be a person who needed clinical help more than public humiliation.

I am all for taking bad people down, but somehow the way it was done here just felt icky? Am I the only one that was cringing?

As I said in the last episode, I want to get back to this gold! I want to see the tenants going after it and Vincenzo trying to keep it safe. Something like that. I am ready for Babel to go away actually. I know they won’t go away now, but can they at least be a smaller part of each episode? Maybe 40% of it instead of 80%?

Let me end by saying that Song Joong-ki looked amazing on that horse, and I started looking up horse stables to day dream about owning one.

Apart from that BL, where a real chemistry has sparked for the first time in the show so far, I think there is nothing to boast about in this episode. The story is going somewhere and now it is like SJK came to Korean to take down Babel. And moreover slow pacedness tempts me to fast forward the drama.
And sometimes those unfunny comic reliefs irritates me.

Episode 7 was a bit more boring and but I think episode 8 was the first episode in which I got invested in this drama- atleast for half an hour.

FL and ML chemistry is ok, but today’s BL scenes were really a bonus.

        Boy love scenes.
Really those scenes with president…I really liked it.
They were hvg better chemistry than ML and FL. WELL, THATS IS A PERSONAL OPINION.

I seriously hated this episode. The characterization of the gay relationship and the amount of time spent creating the humiliation for the bank president was excruciatingly painful. This is something Korea is still in the dark age over, and I feel like I was just dragged through a pool of hatred for the entire episode. I don’t know if I can finish this show now or not.

Same Jane M. It just felt so wrong. I had stink face throughout that entire scene which was practically the entire episode.

I have had a bit of time to re-think this episode now. Since a major theme of the show is using “mafia-like” actions to win, undertaking a fraudulent love affair does fit that theme. I would have been less offended, however, if they hadn’t allowed the actor portraying the bank president to appear to be so sweet and innocent as he fell in love with Vincenzo. Since he was described as a predator who entices young men into situations where he then beats them viciously, if the actor had stayed in that character I would not have felt as much sympathy for him. I do think that sensitivity regarding sexual preference is more the norm in the US and that using a gay love affair for humor in this way would not be acceptable in a TV show here. But I can understand cultural differences and heck! that’s why I watch Korean shows rather than US shows anyway. In general they show more of the positives of humanity. I will stand down and enjoy the rest of this show after my little hissy fit. I love the ensemble cast so much!

There are a few good scenes in Episode 8:
    1. The grab and hug scene (SJK warned JYB not to startle the horse from behind) – OMG I really thought it was going to be something! Or, at least for comedy purposes, I thought SJK was trying to confirm he still likes girls Ha!
    2. SJK suffering from being touched and closed with the bank’s Mr President – I find it reasonable… Since Vincenzo is not gay, it is hard to be close and intimate with another man – Even in heterosexuals, if we girls don’t like a guy, it’s disgusting and painful to be close and touched by the guy!! It’s not a bad projection of gay relationships at all.
Come one. Girls (and Boys both!) can be head over heels in the first minute they see a charming stranger – in a bar, one night stand, in a cafe, in a library, so yes… it is possible, not just in they gay setting.
    3. SJK riding a horse. OMG… Yeasssss!! Hiii…. Hello….. Hiiii…..

I think the punishment with zombies are too light though. He’s a horrible piece of *beep. He knows his Mom let his Dad die. He threatened Vincenzo’s Mom and tried to shut her up, he just watched a lady being locked up in jail for life… He beat up his dates, one of them going blind. No, I don’t feel bad for him!!

The scene where his Mom walked in with 2 Corgis though… that was a bit too much. Mimicking The Queen?

The villain Prosecutor Choi is not scary, not powerful, not acting like a real villain. She just looks like and sounds like a azuma who has not showered for weeks! (she used to finish her morning Zumba in the morning and go straight into meetings… haha yuck)

I agree with others here, I’m bored with Babel and their drugs now. I’ve lost interest. Beyond caring about them lol Can we go back to the Plaza and gold, the very reason why Vincenzo went back to Korea…

Oh, when I said “SJK” i meant to say “Vincenzo”, i.e. the character. I’m saying it in not malicious way… Because Vincenzo was touching, flirting and deeply looking into a guy’s eyes before that, so I thought he hugged the main girl to joke around with her: OK, I’m still into female!!

Oh yes, I think that scene was definitely put in for that. This episode also showed her showing a bit more interest in Vincenzo so we’ll have to see if they have a romance line. (there isn’t a romance line in the character chart)

Usually, on the character chart, they have a line attaching the main two leads with a “heart” connecting them to show that it is a definite love connection. They also have “one sided” love connections and “broken heart” love connections. But in this character chart they did not have any of that. It doesn’t mean that they won’t have it, it just means that they left it vague so they can have it or not. It appears to be a new Kdrama trend feeling with a Mulder/Scully will they won’t they vibe.

The chart doesn’t have a love line but there have been a few show synopsises that have mentioned feelings for both V and CY. It seems they are slowly going there… And I hope they are, too!

This episode was exciting to watch. Though I think using that sort of weakness on Min Seung was a bit too much. The way the drama is developing is actually cool to me. Despite Vincenzo true motive coming back to South Korea been about the gold in the plaza. The development with Babel isn’t so bad also.

If the story was like they are trying to get the gold, so babel try to block them in many ways as they own them and vincenzo trying to win them and vincenzo trying to hide those gold secret from tentants in all possible ways.,it would have been better, more funny, engaging and could have introduced a scope for a good battle. Now its like we can’t feel the fire for revenge or have a heartful laugh as over the top comedy is just out of place. In between the revenge theme can come citing atleast proper reasons in case of ML, so that drama climax will be taking down the babel.

Yes, I need that revenge fire from Vincenzo! That might be why I want the gold storyline to come back in. Along those same lines, it would be really great if Babel stole all the gold from Vincenzo and he had to defeat Babel to get it all back.

I am somewhat amazed at how many people want the story to be the way they want it. I am enjoying the series as is. For once the female lead is a fun, energetic person who is not weeping constantly and drooling over the lead character. (not yet???? hmmmmm) The episode re the President’s son has been bothersome to some people. However, as part of the story line, it was about a nasty person beating up on others because of his displeasure with them. Although peeps found it cringe worthy, and I understand. He got what he deserved. I can’t wait for the next episodes to see how this all works out. It is an interesting story line. Lighten up people, it all is called acting. Enjoy!!

I was surprised by episode 8. I did NOT like it at all! That came out of left field- disgusting! Is Netflix trying to win some points and be PC?
