Recap: True Beauty Episode 8

After yesterday in America I have to tell you that I am ready for some fun fluff to watch and today’s episode delivered just that! Enjoy!

Today’s episode started with a sageuk where we see the story of a noble young adult (Soo-ho) who sees a beautiful woman (Joo-kyung) and wants to marry her. The only thing is that he did not see her face, only her hand. However, with only seeing her hand, he tells his servant that he thinks she will be beautiful. (The servant/slave is Tae-hoon and he’s all like, don’t you want to get to know her?).

Then we skip to present times. Soo-ho goes to a jewelry store and purchases a necklace to confess to Ju-kyung. On the screen flashes the shortened form of “I will confess right away”

Similarly, Seo-joon is with his family who is talking badly about the second male lead of a drama for stealing the first woman lead in the drama. He yells at them all and says that love is love! On the screen it shows the shortened form of “Falling in love is not a crime!”

With Ju-kyung, we see her packing for the high school trip. Her brother comes in and asks what happened with her and Soo-ho. She says nothing, they are still friends. He tells her that a lot of his female friends tell him that they like him more than a friend. Ju-kyung thinks abut that and Soo-jin.

HIGH SCHOOL TRIP

All the kids gather for the high school trip, they are super pumped about it and all that. Ju-kyung and Seo-joon accidentally wear the same shirt to everyone makes jokes and googly eyes about them dating. Soo-ho does not like that at all and glares at them.

Soo-ho also saves a seat for Ju-kyung on the bus, but he only tells her to sit down with him and not her name, so she thinks he means Soo-jin who is walking in behind her. Ju-kyung goes to sit in the back of the bus and Seo-joon sits next to her. Soo-ho stares daggers at him.

The kids go to a glamping camp site and start to play a lot of camping games. Tae-hoon has peeped that Soo-ho is trying to spend time with Ju-kyung but is getting thwarted, so during the games, he tries to get them together using various methods. But they don’t work out. What does work out is Ju-kyung and Seo-joon always ending up together.

To make the situation worse, when the girls retreat to their glampsite to freshen up, Soo-ah asks Soo-jin if she likes Soo-ho and how long they have known each other and all that. It comes out that she has known him since they were kids, so Soo-ah thinks they would be the perfect couple as #1 and #2 in the school. Ju-kyung stays quiet at that. But, it does actually look like Soo-jin has a secret crush on Soo-ho (spoiler alert, she does, it is in the character chart).

Because of Ju-kyung’s uncertainty about Soo-ho’s feelings towards her or Soo-jin, Ju-kyung decides to avoid Soo-ho even more.

GHOST STORY

Later on during lunch, Soo-ho continues to look and pine over Ju-kyung. But the most important part about lunch is that the owner of the glamping sight tells the comical thugs a ghost story about a girl from the Joseon Dynasty who got married to a man. On the wedding night the man wanted to see her face. She asked if he likes the look of a fruit or the taste better. he said, of course the taste. The taste of dwenjang is more important than the container. So she decides to finally show her face to him. He is horrified at how plain she is and runs away in horror. The girl, humiliated, killed herself in a well. Now, she comes out and searches for pretty girls so that she can steal their face.

That well is on this campsite so he forbid them from looking for it along the trail. Of course, this only makes them want to look for it even more.

Later, the fun and games continue as the kids play a truth game. Lots of truths and lies goes around. The most important one is that Ju-kyung says there is someone she likes but the truth machine says that is a lie. The two guys, Seo-joon and Soo-ho, wonder if that could be true or false?

Later on that night, Ju-kyung takes the truth game off to herself and says the same thing. This time it says it is true that there is someone she likes. Soo-ho watches her do this secretly (he is standing right behind her). When she stands up, she sees him so he asks her straight out, are you avoiding me? She tells him no.

So he asks her if she would like to take a walk with him? They walk to the lake. He invites her to go on a boat they spot at the lake. While on the boat he asks her about things she might like (it is adorable). He also plays her an unreleased song on his phone from his friend who died. It is a really nice moment. During this moment, she takes photos of the scenery around the lake and is about to take a photo of him, but she apologizes and says she knows he doesn’t like photos.

He tells her he just had bad experience with paparazzi when he was little, but he wouldn’t mind taking a photo with her. So they get very close together in this boat to take a photo. It is an intimate moment. However, a fly or bee buzzes around Ju-kyung’s face which makes her fall into the water.

He jumps in after her so they both end up soaking wet.

Unfortunately for Ju-kyung, this wipes off all her makeup. Also unfortunately, she is dressed in all white like a ghost (you see where this is going?). He walks back with her but they run into Soo-jin so she quickly runs away. Soo-ho distracts Soo-jin and walks her back so that Ju-kyung can get away. But he ditches Soo-jin as soon as they are back at the campsite to go looking for Ju-kyung again.

But the comical thugs are out looking for the ghost so she accidentally runs into them at the well. They all scream and run away. Seo-joon passes out, and Ju-kyung keeps on running. She does manage to get back to her tent and get all her makeup on. But goodness, that looked like a lot of work.

Unfortunately, Soo-ho and Ju-kyung did not reconnect that night.

The next day, Joo-kyung is a bit sick and rests inside the bus. Seo-joon sees her and gets her medicine. He also lets her sleep on his shoulder. But Soo-ho sees this and calls Seo-joon out of the bus to have a talking to.

They have the weirdest fight sequence that looks like a dream but isn’t a dream?

Afterwards, Tae-hoon tells Soo-ho that he should definitely confess to Ju-kyung. He tries to give him some advice on that (honestly, Tae-hoon is the friend hero of this episode). Ju-kyung overhears them talking and thinks Tae-hoon is talking about Soo-ho confessing to Soo-jin so she is bummed.

TALENT SHOW

That evening is the talent show. Soo-ho continues his pining and staring at Ju-kyung during the show. Ju-kyung also looks at Soo-ho however Soo-ho doesn’t really see her looking at him. Tae-hoon sees this though and thinks of a plan for them to get together.

During the talent show, everyone wants Seo-joon to sing. He decides to sing a song and sounds great. Ju-kyung happily smiles and watches. Soo-ho looks at her. But then Soo-jin comes up and sits next to Soo-ho. This makes the mood go south so Ju-kyung decides to leave.

On her walk back, Tae-hoon runs up to her all out of breath and gives her Soo-ho’s jacket. He tells her that Soo-ho is walking to the bridge and to give it to him there. Then he runs to find Soo-ho and tells him that Ju-kyung will be walking on the bridge so now is his chance to confess to her!

Soo-ho takes off running. But when he gets to the bridge, Soo-jin is the person waiting for him, not Ju-kyung. It turns out that Soo-jin ran into Ju-kyung and told her that she was looking for Soo-ho. So Ju-kyung gave her Soo-ho’s jacket and said he was going to be on the bridge.

Soo-ho took off running to find Ju-kyung as soon as Soo-jin told him what happened. He finds her crying on a rock with Seo-joon comforting her. She walks away from Seo-joon to the campsite and hides her tears behind some sheets that are hanging out to dry.

Somehow, all her makeup has gotten wiped off. Soo-ho goes up to her and is about to confess to her that he likes her. But the talent show is over by now and all the kids are walking back. They will see her without her makeup on! Ju-kyung takes off running with one of the white sheets.

The comical thugs see her running with the white sheet and think she is the ghost they saw! Get her! They start chasing after her.

Soo-hoo also runs after her, but he takes a short cut.

Ju-kyung runs through the woods and trips, natch. She is about to get caught by the comica thugs. But Soo-ho comes up and pulls her away by the hand (or wrist? One of them). He pulls her behind a boulder and is finally able to tell her that he likes her.

Then he kisses her.

Up on the hill, the real ghost comes out and looks at Soo-ho kissing Ju-kyung. She says, “Perhaps there is a man who knows that the taste of dwenjang is more important that the container.”

Fade Out

COMMENT

Yes, this show hit the spot with its nonsense and nonsensical scenes that have all the hilarity and none of the plot points. There are so many scenes in today’s episode to just enjoy for the sole purpose of laughing. If you are looking to see how they tie in to the overall drama, look somewhere else. Also, Tae-hoon is the friend hero of this episode. I loved him playing Cupid on our duo. Soo-jin might be turning into a villian, though I really hope not. I love Soo-jin as the friend who looks out for her friends! Don’t change her just because she likes the male lead!

There is a big scene that I did not mention in the recap that does tie into the storyline and that is with Ju-kyung’s sister. Her sister is working on the one year tribute album to the pop singer who killed himself. She asked Seo-joon to help let them release the pop idols songs and Seo-joon told her no, he will never let them release an album when they are the ones that killed him in his eyes.

So it appears that the suicide storyline will come back full force. Hopefully it is done in a tasteful way that can fit into the fluff of this drama because this show has become all skittles. Right now, I am not complaining.

(Also, we are testing out a new recap format which is to put the recap all in one post and to write it up as soon as we finish watching it. Let us know how you like this format. For instance, is it too much detail or too little detail or just the right amount?)

My idea of a perfect recap is a lot of information, lots of details and the author’s insight into what happened in the episode. Thank you for the recap!

I didn’t see the confession coming, honestly. Even if it was obvious. I expected it to be like all other K-Dramas where the ML confesses around episode 11 or 12, but this time we got it as early as 8. The previews for next week’s episodes are likely misleading for the sake of hype, but needless to say, I’m not looking forward to them. Not because I’m not excited or hooked, but I don’t think I’ll be able to deal with them breaking up so quickly.

It’s already annoying enough that they didn’t end up together in the Webtoon (fortunately it’s ongoing, so that can still change).

    Let’s see where things go…

(tiny webtoon spoiler) — I gotta say I was annoyed that we got a lot of Seo-joon in the webtoon and not enough Suho! But yes, the webtoon is not over yet so it could change.

I personally like the previous format better because it feels like watching the drama. 🙂

    Anyway…
I like this drama a lot. It is so funny.
I decided to read the webtoon as well… But i kind of regret that. The webtoon is good. So good that I can’t enjoy Jukyung and Suho’s drama scenes as much as before because I can’t get over how beautiful Jukyung and Seojun’s chemistry is in the webtoon version.

I should separate the drama and the webtoon because it has been a different story. *cry for Seojun’s webtoon character* This drama is more funny than the webtoon, actually. The romantic stories of Jukyung’s siblings and a lot of scenes are indeed successful in making me laugh.

Thank you for letting us know, Owl Lip! Also, yes it would be hard to separate the drama from the webtoon. They are similar but not the same at all!
