Y’all, I might explode from joy at the prospect of this show being amazing. Dance Sports Girls, have you heard of it? I hadn’t until I just got wind of it and started googling it immediately. Dance Sports Girls is about a group of girls living in a small city who escape from their everyday lives through the competition sport of dance. I’m talking ballroom dance, y’all. BALLROOM DANCE. Ugh, I love it. I love everything to do with ballroom dancing, I love everything to do with escapism (ie. only doing something for the sole reason that you enjoy it), and I love shows about positive girl friendships. Like I was saying, I might explode from joy.
Dance Sports Girls is the literal translation of the title and is based off of a documentary of the same name that followed eight girls from Geoje Girls High School whom were all members of the schools dance sports club. In real life, the girls are all preparing to graduate and get jobs at the local shipyard which is the main job prospect in the city. However, the shipping industry is in sharp decline. So these girls have to deal with that as well as other issues that bring stress to their lives. The one thing that makes them all smile is ballroom dancing.
Doesn’t this have middle of America coal industry, steel industry, or car industry vibe written all over it? I can see this storyline being picked up and plopped right into any town in the US that only exists to serve a particular industry that is no longer in demand.
Dance Sports Girls will star a nice crop of six young up and comers who include: Lee Yoo-mi, Kim Soo-Hyun, Park Se-wan, Joo Hae-eun, Lee Joo-young, and Shin Do-hyun. So far, the lone boy will be played by Jang Dong-yoon who is cast as a high school student that likes, but pretends to be uninterested in ballroom dance. Because of course, no boy can ever like anything to do with traditional dancing. I am not sure as to whether he will continue to be the lone boy in the show or if there will be other young male talents cast. I assume they would need more than one guy to dance with all these ladies, though.
The above poster and the two trailers below are all for the documentary that the drama is based off of. The images of the talent are for the drama that should air in December.
Dance Sports Girls will take over KBS2’s Monday and Tuesday 10 pm time slot currently held by Matrimonial Chaos.
