Nevertheless: Should Na-bi Pick Potato Boy or Butterfly Boy? (Poll Results + Spoilers)

How do you feel now that Nevertheless is over? A few days before the finale, I posted a poll asking the Drama Milk community who they think Na-bi should pick. Well, the results are in and Na-bi choosing herself and staying single won with 20 votes. That’s nearly half! 14 votes went to Potato Boy (aka Do-hyuk) and only 7 votes went to Butterfly Boy (aka Jae-eon).

To be honest, I’m really surprised Na-bi ended up with Jae-eon. She ends up with Do-hyuk in the webtoon, so that’s what I was expecting. The fact that the screenwriters would change it to Jae-eon in a time where it’s encouraged to take care of your mental health before entering a relationship is pretty interesting. Especially since society is starting to criticize shows, movies, and books where women end up with partners who began the relationship by subtly manipulating them, and who have their own mental health issues to work on. Even if Nevertheless wanted to make some changes to the drama, I think it would’ve been empowering for Na-bi to end up alone but happy with herself. Her choosing Jae-eon seems to go against the overall message of the webtoon, and pushes the problematic narrative that love can change/tame a person or make them see the error of their ways.

In conclusion, even though I was disappointed by the ending, I still enjoyed the first half of the drama and the conversations about healthy relationships and mental health it sparked. What did you think of the ending? Did it go the way you expected?
