Lee Sun-kyun and Ahn Jae-hong’s Arena interview: Get close, get closer

Below is an interview Lee Sun-kyun (이선균)and Ahn Jae-hong (안재홍) participated in to promote their upcoming Korean movie, The Kings Case Note (임금님의 사건수첩) that we translated from Korean to English. I’ve loved Lee Sun-kyun ever since he was the second male lead in Coffee Prince (I wanted him to get the girl!) and have recently come to know Ahn Jae-hong from the Korean drama Answer Me 1988 and the upcoming Fight for My Way. I know Fight for My Way hasn’t even aired yet, but still, I feel like I know him already! From the interview it looks like they became close friends and that the entire crew had a fun time while shooting. Enjoy the interview and Happy Monday!

이선균과 안재홍이 이렇게 가까운 사이가 될 줄은 몰랐다. 서로 바라보는 눈빛에서 사랑과 웃음이 넘쳐흐른다. 이게 다 영화 임금님의 사건수첩 때문이다.

I didn’t know that Lee Sun-kyun and Ahn Jae-hong had this type of friendship. When they look at each other they are full of love and laughter. This is all because of their movie The King’s Case Note.m>

촬영장에 모인 모든 여자들은 안재홍을 보고 ‘어머, 너무 귀엽다!’를 연발했다. 하지만 단숨에 여심을 사로잡은 안재홍의 시선은 오직 이선균에게 향해 있었다. “형님, 진짜 멋있으세요. 다음 작품 때문에 살이 많이 빠지셨는데, 사진엔 더 멋지게 나오는 거 같아요.” 그러면 이선균은 안재홍에게 “오늘 되게 잘생겼는데?”라고 화답한다. 그리고 두 사람은 서로 바라보며 웃는다. 이선균이 투덜대며 농담을 던지면 안재홍은 눈물나게 웃는다. 영국 드라마 <셜록> 팬들이 왜 셜록과 왓슨의 브로맨스에 빠져드는지 조금은 알 것도 같았다.

All the girls at the shoot kept saying, “Oh, he is so cute!” when they saw Ahn Jae-hong. However, Ahn Jae-hong, who instantly won all the girl’s hearts, gaze was fixed only on Lee Sun-kyun. “Hyung, you look really stylish. You lost a lot of weight for your next role, but it makes you look cooler in the photo.” Lee Sun-kyun replies to Ahn Jae-hong, “You look very handsome today.” Then they look at each other and laugh. When Lee Sun-kyun jokes to Ahn Jae-hong while grumbling, Ahn Jae-hong laughs until he cry’s. Now, I kind of understand why Sherlock fans are falling in love with the bromance between Sherlock and Watson.

오늘 두 사람은 영화 <임금님의 사건수첩>을 홍보하기 위해 하루 일정을 전부 빼놨다. 사건을 쫓는 임금 예종과 그 예종을 쫓는 신입사관 이서의 ‘버디 무비’ 형식 사극 영화다. 두 사람은 이 영화를 위해서 라디오 방송에 나가 한참 수다를 떨었고, 이동하는 자동차 안에서 연예 프로그램 인터뷰도 했다. 그러고는 스튜디오에 도착해 <아레나>와 화보를 촬영하고 있다. 옷을 몇 번 갈아입고 인터뷰까지 마치고 나면 인터넷 생중계로 ‘궁중 음식 먹방’도 해야 한다. 벌써부터 전 굽는 냄새가 진동하는 와중에 ‘오늘 음식은 추리 퀴즈를 맞히는 사람만 먹을 수 있다’는 비보가 들려온다. 이선균과 안재홍이 이토록 혼신의 힘을 다해 ‘영업’을 뛰는 이 영화가 궁금해졌다. 왜 이들이 이렇게까지 열심인지, 직접 물어봤다

Today, they scheduled the entire day to promote their movie The King’s Case Note. It is a historical movie in the form of a “buddy movie” where King Ye-Jong chases a case, and a new officer, Yi-seo, follows the King. To advertise the movie, they chatted a lot on a radio show and had an interview with an entertainment program while riding in a car. Then they arrived at the studio and shot a pictorial with Arena. After changing their clothes several times and finishing the interview, they then needed to do a live Royal Cuisine원래 이렇게 후배들과 다정하게 지내는 편인가?
선균 사람들이 다 나를 까칠하다고 하더라. 둥글게 어울려 다니는 편은 아니다. 그냥, 나는 별로 친절하지 않다. 그래서 후배들이 오히려 어려워하지. 특별히 잘해주고, 다정하게 대하지는 않는다.

Do you always get along well with younger people (juniors) like this?
Sun-kyun Everyone says I am cranky (hard to get along with). I don’t get along well with others too much. I am just not that kind of person. Therefore, juniors have a difficult time dealing with me. I don’t particularly treat them nicely or kindly.

그런데 안재홍과는 어떻게 친해졌나?
선균 원래 알던 사이였다. 내가 다른 영화에 출연했을 때 재홍이가 제작팀 스태프로 일한 적 있었다. 그때도 같이 고기 먹고 하면서 잘 지냈다. 그런데 이번에 함께 영화를 찍으면서 굉장히 많이 친해진 거다. 거의 모든 장면을 함께했고, 지방 촬영이 대부분이다 보니 붙어 있는 시간이 워낙 많았다. 나랑은 열 살 넘게 차이 나는 후배인데 그냥 두세 살 차이 나는 동네 동생 같다. 열한 살 차이라고 들을 때마다 소스라치게 놀란다.

How did you get to know Ahn Jae-hong?
Sun-kyun We already knew each other. Jae-hong worked in a production crew on another movie I was in. We had a good time back then eating steaks together. But we got very close while filming this movie. In most of the scenes, we appeared together and we spent a lot of time together because most of the shooting locations were in different countries (not in Seoul). We have a big age gap, more than 10 years, but he feels more like a neighborhood friend who is only a few years younger than me.

재홍 사실 후배 입장에서 열 살 많은 선배님은 어려울 수 있는데, 그런 생각은 한번도 해본 적 없을 정도로 나를 배려해주셨다. 대부분 촬영을 전라도 지역에서 진행했고 대기하는 시간도 길었다. 촬영이 끝나고 같이 밥 먹고 지내는 동안 함께 산 것처럼 느껴졌다. 그리고 선배님이 확실히 리더십이 있다.
Jae-hong It can, in fact, be difficult for a junior actor to deal with a senior actor who is ten years older, but he has considered me so much that I have never felt that way. Most of the shooting took place in Jeonlado and we waited for a long time in between scenes. It felt like we were roommates who ate and then went home together after each day’s shooting. And he definitely has leadership qualities.

선균 나 리더십 없는데? 나는 나서는 걸 제일 싫어한다. 내가 리더십이 있다면 주로 이런 거다. 귓속말로 “야, 저런 거 졸라 싫지 않냐? 그냥 같이 제끼고 방에서 술이나 먹을까?” 하는 이런 종류의 선동하는 리더십, 싫은 것에 공감하는 리더십은 있다. 하하. 어디 가서 나한테 리더십 있다고 하지 마라.
Sun-kyun I have leadership qualities? I hate to come forward (he doesn’t like to be in front of people and lead them). If I have any leadership qualities, it should be something like this: I usually whisper, “Hey, those things really bother me, do you agree? Would you like to skip and drink in our room?” I have that kind of instigating or sympathizing with what I don’t like, leadership quality. HaHa. Don’t tell anyone that I have leadership qualities.

시나리오를 많이 받아볼 텐데, 이 영화는 특히 어떤 점이 눈에 들어오던가?
선균 사극 장르를 언젠가 해봐야겠다고 생각했는데, 첫 단추를 어떻게 꿰어야 할지 늘 고민이었다. 드라마로 시작하기엔 버거울 것 같았고, 정통 사극 영화는 겁이 나기도 했다. 그러던 차에 이 작품을 알게 됐다. 내용도 재미있고 캐릭터도 입체적이고. 선물처럼 다가온 영화다.

I would assume that you receive a lot of projects, what was special about this movie?
Sun-kyun I always thought I should do a historical Korean movie (사극), but I was always worried about how to have a good start. It would be difficult to do as a TV drama and an authentic historical film was a little scary as well. Then I found this film. The story is interesting and the characters are three dimensional, so it came to me as a gift.

재홍 사극이지만 <구니스> 같은 어드벤처 영화 같았다. 주인공을 따라 재미있는 모험을 하는 이야기라 되게 신선했다. 시나리오를 읽기 시작해서 덮는 순간까지 ‘재미있다’는 생각 뿐이었다.
Jae-hong Though it is a historical movie, it was like an adventure movie like Guinness. It was so fresh because the story has a fun adventure along with the main character. The only thought I had while reading the scenario beginning to the end, was, “This is fun”.

선균 내가 연기한 예종은 실제로 열아홉 살에 단명했다. 그래서 감독님한테 ‘나를 캐스팅하는 게 말이 되냐’고 반문했다. 하하. 게다가 원작 만화가 있는데, 표지만 봐도 완전히 순정 만화다. 그런데 나랑 재홍이가 출연하다니. 원작을 본 팬들이라면 반드시 욕할 텐데. 하하. 사실 이 영화는 원작에서 제목과 설정을 가져오긴 했지만 전혀 다른 풍의 새로운 이야기다. 우리끼리는 농담 삼아 순정 만화를 명랑 만화로 바꿨다고 얘기한다. 만약 감독과 제작자가 원작에 충실했다면 우리 대신에 김수현, 임시완 같은 친구들을 캐스팅해야 했다.
Sun-kyun King Ye-jong, the character I played in this movie, actually died when he was 19. So I told the director, “It doesn’t make any sense to cast me.” Haha. Moreover, it is based on a comic, and you will notice from the cover, it is definitely a romantic comic. But Jae-hong and I are cast! Fans of the original comic will curse us… haha. In fact, this movie borrowed the title and set-up from the original comic, but it is completely different from the original. Among us, we even joke to each other that they changed a romance comic to a fun comic. If the director and producers wanted to stick with the original comic, they should have cast guys like Kim Su-hyun or Im Si-wan.

재홍 감독님도 나에게 원작 만화를 읽지 말라고 하셨다.
Jae-hong The director also told me not to read the original comic.

선균 내가 그렇게 제목을 바꾸자고 했는데. 난 사실 우리 영화의 영어 제목에서 따온 ‘The King’s Case Note’가 더 마음에 들었다. 아무래도 한복 입고 나오는 사극이니까, 한글 제목으로 지은 것 같다. 사실 나도 제목만 보고 그냥 아기자기한 코미디 영화일 거라고 생각했는데, 은근 스케일이 큰 영화더라. 이 작품은 두 사람의 필모그래피에서 가장 독특한 장르로 남지 않을까?
Sun-kyun I suggested several times to change the name of the movie. To be honest, I prefer the English title of our movie The King’s Case Note. I guess they gave it a Korean title because the movie is a historical movie with traditional hanboks. In fact, I thought this move is just a cute comedy movie when I looked at the title, but it seems like it is a movie with quite a scale. I guess this movie will be an unusual genre in our filmography?

선균 일단 사극을 처음 경험한다는 의미가 있다. 독특하다면 독특하겠지.
Sun-kyun First of all, this movie is meaningful to me as my first historical movie. If it is unique, it is unique.

재홍 엄청난 의미가 있는 작품이다. 왜냐면 이렇게 큰 규모의 상업 영화에서 이렇게 큰 역할을 맡아 연기한 것이 처음이기 때문이다.
Jae-hong This move has a big significance for me. Because it is the first time I’ve taken such a large role in such a large scale commercial film.

선균 나도 그렇다. 내 출연작 중 예산이 가장 큰 영화라 우리 둘 다 엄청 긴장하고 있다.
Sun-kyun Same for me. We are both nervous because this movie has the biggest budget of my acting career.

재홍 이 영화가 선균 형에게도 가장 큰 규모의 작품인지는 얼마 전에 직접 말씀하셔서 알게 된 사실이다.
Jae-hong I recently learned from him that the scale of this movie is the biggest in his acting career.

선균 더 솔직히 말하면 지금까지 내가 찍은 영화 예산의 두 배다. 더블이라고. 그러니까 형이 이렇게 군소리 안 하고 열심히 하는 거야. 나 지금 바빠 죽겠는데. 하하.
Sun-kyun To be honest, the budget for this movie is twice more than the movies I usually act in. Double! That is why I am working so hard without any complaints. I am dying busy right now. Haha

서로의 최고 작품을 꼽아달라는 질문을 하려고 했는데, 분위기상 보나마나 임금님의 사건수첩 얘길 하겠지?
I was going to ask you what is each other’s best work, but it seems like obviously, it is The King’s Case Note, right?

선균 꼭 그런 건 아니다.
Sun-kyun Not necessarily.

재홍 다음 인터뷰 때 그 진실 여부를 확인할 수 있을 거다. 하하.
Jae-hong You will be able to figure it out at the next interview. Haha.

선균 대답하자면, 나는 단연 <족구왕>이지. 재홍이의 진가를 확인할 수 있다.
Sun-kyun To answer the question, I will pick The King of Jokgu (Foot volleyball). You can see the true value of Jae-hong.

재홍 나는 임금님의 사건 수첩. 지금 이 영화에 집중해야 하는 시기라 이런 대답밖에 못하겠다. 이 영화 빼고 이야기하자면 드라마 파스타;를 정말 재밌게 봤다. 학교 다닐 때였는데도 ‘본방사수’를 했을 정도다. 영화 끝까지 간다도 너무 좋았고, 선배님은 대표작이 많아서 하나만 꼽기 어렵다.
Jae-hong For me it is The King’s Case Note. I can only say this because I am focusing on this movie. Except that, I really enjoyed the drama Pasta. I watched it when it aired on TV even though I was a student. I also really liked the movie A Hard Day, but it is hard to pick the best one because he has many representative works.

배우마다 고정된 이미지가 있다. 이선균을 예로 들면 로맨틱 코미디의 제왕?
Each actor has a fixed image. Lee Sun-kyun, for example, is the king of romantic comedies?

선균 에이, 그게 언제 얘긴데. 대략 7년 정도 된 거 같다. 요즘엔 짜증 잘 낸다는 이야기만 듣는다. 오늘 라디오 방송에서 ‘짜증계의 스칼렛 요한슨’이라는 별명을 이야기하고 왔다. 스칼렛 요한슨이 목소리가 저음인데, 이동진 영화 평론가가 <끝까지 간다>를 보고 그런 별명을 붙여줬다.
Sun-kyun Come on, that was a long time ago. Almost seven years ago. Nowadays, I only hear that I am easily annoyed. I talked at a radio program about my nickname ‘Scarlet Johansson of the irritation world.” Because Scarlet Johansson has a low-pitched voice, and Lee Dong-jin, a movie critic, gave me that nickname after watching A Hard Day. (Maybe Scarlet Johansson’s low voice makes some people in Korea think she is angry or irritated a lot of the time?)

“엄청난 의미가 있는 작품이다. 왜냐면 이렇게 큰 규모의 상업 영화에서 이렇게 큰 역할을 맡아 연기한 것이 처음이기 때문이다.”
” This move has big significance for me. Because it is the first time to have such a big role in such a large scale commercial film.”

“사극 장르를 언젠가 해봐야겠다고 생각했는데, 첫 단추를 어떻게 꿰어야 할지 늘 고민이었다. 내용도 재미있고 캐릭터도 입체적이고. 선물처럼 다가온 영화다.”
“I always thought I should do a historic movie sometime, but I was always worried about how to have a good start. The story is interesting and characters are not flat, so it came to me as a gift “

안재홍을 예로 들자면 ‘귀엽다’ 정도? 오늘 촬영장의 모든 여자들이 안재홍의 귀여움에 치를 떨었고, 캐릭터 소개에서도 늘 사랑스럽고 귀엽다는 말이 빠지지 않는 걸 보면 말이다.
To describe Ahn Jae-hong, for example, we might say “cute?” All of the girls at the shoot were mesmerized by the cuteness of Ahn Jae-hong, and your character introductions always included words like lovely and cute.

재홍 오늘은 <아레나> 촬영인데, 멋있어야 했다. 내가 잘못한 것 같다. 귀여우면 안 됐다.
Jae-hong I had to be handsome because of the Arena shoot today. I think it is my fault. I shouldn’t be cute.

이번 영화에서는 사람들이 기대하는 이미지 말고, 어떤 새로운 모습을 보여주나?
In this film, do you show us a new appearance other than the image people expect from you?

선균 일단은 내가 사극이 처음이니까 용포 입고 수염 붙인 모습 자체가 새롭지 않을까? 한번 해보니까 사극이 재밌더라. 나중에는 정통 사극도 해보고 싶다. 용포도 입어 버릇하니까 괜찮던데?
Sun-kyun First of all, because it is my first historic drama, I think my look of a long beard and a King’s dress, itself is new to the audience, isn’t it? I would like to try an authentic historic movie again in the future. I kind of liked the King’s clothing once I got used to it.

재홍 아마 선균 형이 집에 용포가 있는 유일한 배우일 거다.
Jae-hong I think he is probably the only actor with a King outfit at home.

선균 촬영 끝나고 선물로 받았다. 그만큼 우리 현장 분위기가 좋았다는 증거다. 의상팀이 날 얼마나 예뻐했으면 일일이 수작업으로 자수를 놓은 용포를 선물해줬겠나. 가격도 천만원 상당이라고 들었다. 집에 가져갔더니 전혜진이 “입지도 않을 이 비싼 걸 준다고 그냥 가져오면 어떡하냐. 설 명절에 입고 어디 갈 거냐”고 구박했다.
Sun-kyun I received it as a gift after filming. That is proof that our mood while filming was great. The costume team liked me so much, they even gave me the precious embroidered King’s dress which is all hand made. I heard it costs more than 10 million won ($10,000 US). When I brought it home, my wife Jeon Hye-jin told me (in the text, he said his wife mistreated him as a joke) “How can you just bring that expensive yet useless cloth home just because it is free. Do you dare wear it during the New Year’s day holiday celebration?”

재홍 샤워 가운으로 입으셔도 될 거 같다. 아님 명절에 용포 입고 귀성길 운전을 하셔도 어울릴 것 같다. 나도 집에 건모와 한복이 있다. 기념으로 의상팀이 선물해준 거다.
Jae-hong I think you can wear it as a bathrobe. Or it would fit you well if you wear it and drive back home during the holidays. I also have a traditional hat and hanbok at home. It was a thoughtful gift from the costume team to remember them by.

선균 이게 바로 우리 영화 현장 분위기를 보여주는 대목이다. 얼마나 서로 사이가 좋고 화기애애했는지 알겠지?
Sun-kyun This is the part that shows the atmosphere of our movie site. You see how close we were to each other and how harmonious and happy we were?

지금도 밖에서 제작사 대표님이 웃고 계시는 걸 보니, 잘 알겠다. 이번 영화에서 두 사람의 연기가 빛난 순간을 꼽는다면?
Point taken because even now, the production company’s representative is smiling outside. Can you pick a moment that your acting was shining in this film?

선균 거의 모든 장면에 함께 등장했다. 지금 우리 인터뷰처럼 만담같이 계속 대사를 주고 받기 때문에 어느 한 장면을 꼽기 힘들다. 그런데 어느 순간 굉장히 편해진 계기가 있긴 하다. 초반에는 우리 둘 다 사극이라는 프레임에 갇혀서 ‘이렇게 해도 되나?’ 싶었다. 뭔가 이도저도 아닌 거 같아서 감독님과 셋이 모여 회의를 했다. 말도 사극 톤에 갇히지 말고 자유롭게 하고, 행동도 ‘왕이 이래도 되나?’ 하는 생각을 버리고 막 하겠다고. 그 이후부터는 모든 걸 내려놓게 됐고, 애드리브와 함께 시너지가 나오기 시작했다. 아마도 왕이 체통을 버리면서부터 재미가 생기지 않았나 싶다.
Sun-kyun We appeared in almost every scene together. Just like this comic chat interview, we talked all the time so it is hard to pick a scene. However, at some point, there was a time when the acting became very comfortable. In the beginning, we both were trapped in the frame of a historic movie, so we felt like ‘can we do like this?’(means talking freely like comic chat). Because it became neither one thing nor the other, so the three of us had a discussion with the director. I decided that I will say freely, not trapped in the historical movie talking style, and forget about the idea of ‘Can a King behave like this?’ and act whatever way I want to. Afterward, I put down all the burden and then I began ad-libbing and started to generate synergy. Perhaps I started to have fun after throwing away the King’s dignity.

재홍 아니, 나는 기술 시사를 보고 왔는데 완성된 영화를 보면 예종이 그렇게 가벼운 캐릭터는 아니다. 완급 조절을 정말 잘하셔서 예종이 아주 매력적이다. 내가 직접 보고 온 거라 믿으셔도 된다.
Jae-hong Not entirely true, I have seen the technical preview and in the final version, King Ye-jong is not a light character. He is very attractive because Sun-kyun is very good at tempo control. You can trust me because I reviewed it myself.

흥행 돌풍을 일으키면 시리즈로 이어질 가능성도 있지 않을까?
It would be possible to turn it into a series if it breaks box office record, do you think so?

선균 2편을 기획하고 만든 건 아니지만 여지가 있지 않을까 싶다. 일단 우리 중에 누가 죽지는 않으니까 얼마든지 만들려면 만들 수 있다.
Sun-kyun We didn’t plan to make a sequel, but I think there is still room for it. First of all, because none of us die in the movie, if we want to make another one, we can definitely do it.

재홍 진짜 안 죽으니까 안심하고 봐도 좋다. 그리고 사실 이 영화로 시리즈를 만들자고 한다면 소재도 무궁무진하다. 여차하면 타임슬립해서 현대로 넘어올 수도 있고. 하하.
Jae-hong We really don’t die in the movie, so be relaxed and enjoy watching it. And in fact, if we wanted to make a series from this movie, there is endless material as well. If needed, we can time slip to the modern world. Haha.

제목 때문에 사건을 추리해보고 싶다는 생각이 들었는데, 이렇게 스포일러 해도 되나?
I wanted to deduct the case in the movie because of the title. Can you spoil the story like this?

선균 요즘 관객은 ‘미드’나 ‘영드’를 많이 봤기 때문에 수준이 굉장히 높다. 사건을 추리하는 과정은 내 대사로 많이 풀어나가고, 몽타주로도 설명될 거다. 추리하는 재미보다, 우리 두 사람의 ‘케미’와 여정을 즐겨주면 좋겠다. 사실 <임금님의 사건수첩>이라고 하면 다들 사건과 추리를 기대하잖아. 그래서 내가 그렇게 제목을 바꾸자고 한 거다. 하하.

Sun-kyun Nowadays, audiences have high standards, because they have watched a lot of “American dramas” or “British dramas.” The process of deduction will be presented in my dialogs and also in a montage. You can enjoy our chemistry and the journey rather than having fun with the process of deduction. In fact, if the title is The King’s Case Note (in Korean), then everyone expects a case and a deduction. That is why I suggested changing the title to the English version, The King’s Case Note. Haha.
