Kim Seul-gi First Look Interview: A Little Red Girl

And we are back again today with another interview. Two in one day is pretty great for us. This interview is for Mushmush. Mushmush is a giveaway winner from our first giveaway contest and requested an interview for Kim Seul-gi (김슬기) and Lee Dong-wook (이동욱). We have Kim Seul-gi below and Lee Dong-wook will be coming up this weekend.

Kim Seul-gi has to be one of the cutest stars out right now. Plus she’s hilarious, which is attractive in it’s own right. I love the photos from this spread and I love her answers to the questions. She said she was really nervous with the provacative clothing, but she had to step out of her boundaries and do it. This interview is great because it isn’t about one thing or another, it really delves into all aspects of her acting life. I knew there was a reason why I loved 1st Look interviews. I need to find some more to translate, they are that great.

무엇을 기대했건 김슬기는 상상 그 이상을 보여준다. 욕을 할 때도, 성인 연기를 보여줄 때도, 그리고 비욘세로 분해서 춤을 출 때도 그녀는 시청자를 놀래켰다. 현실 속의 김슬기 역시 의외의 면모를 보여주었다. 가슴속에 소녀를 감춘 채 섹시 걸로 변신한 스물세 살의 김슬기는 신비로웠다.
Whatever you may expect, Kim Seul-gi shows you things that are beyond your imagination. She surprised audiences with her adult acting and dancing as Beyoncé. Kim Seul-gi in real life also showed an unexpected side of herself. 23-year-old Kim Seul-gi, who transformed into a sexy girl while hiding a young girl in her heart, was mystical.

좋은 씨앗인 줄 알았다. tvN [SNL 코리아](이하 [SNL])에서 작지만 단단한 김슬기를 볼 때마다 그녀의 다음을 기대하고는 했으니까. 하지만 텔레토비 옷을 입고 소리를 지르는 것도, 달콤한 목소리로 ‘너 때문에 잠이 깨’라고 노래를 부르는 것도, 드라마의 신 스틸러부터 연극 무대의 주인공까지 아우를 수 있는 것도, 심지어 스모키 화장을 하고 비욘세처럼 춤추는 것도 김슬기에게는 모두 현재다. 어쩌면 그녀는 이미 열매인지도 모른다. 지금 모습 그대로 더 크고 둥글게 여물어갈….
I knew that she was a good seed. I was looking forward to seeing Kim Seul-gi’s next move when I saw small but solid Kim Seul-gi on tvN’s SNL Korea ([SNL]). However, for Kim Seul-gi, everything is present, her screaming while wearing a Teletubby costume, singing “I wake up because of you” with her sweet voice; a scene stealer in dramas, a heroine in the theater, even dancing like Beyoncé with smoky makeup. Maybe she is already a fully-grown fruit. A fruit that will ripen just like now, that will become bigger and rounder…

항상 궁금했어요. 목 건강은 괜찮은지. 
다행스럽게도 튼튼한 편인 것 같아요. 그런데 한동안 스케줄이 너무 빡빡해서 좀 힘들기도 했어요. 지금은 대부분 마무리되었지만, 연극, 드라마, 영화, 광고 촬영에 뮤직비디오도 찍었고, [SNL]까지 겹친 때가 있었거든요.
I am wondering if your vocal chords are fine.
Fortunately, I think they are healthy. However, because of my busy schedule, it was a little strenuous. I am almost done with it, I had theater, drama, movie, commercial shoots, and a music video at the same time and on top of all those, I also had [SNL] as well.

심지어 최근 공포 영화 [무서운 이야기 2]를 찍고 있다고 들었는데, 소리를 많이 지를 수밖에 없는 장르잖아요. 
감독님이 제가 소리 지르는 걸 듣고 놀라시더라고요. 이렇게 세게 소리를 지를 수 있다니! 으하하하하. 사실 정말 힘든 건 목보다는 잠이었어요. 말로만 듣던 살인 스케줄을 직접 겪어보니 정말 힘들더라고요. 매일 기도하면서 버텼는데, 지나고 보니까 그 속에서도 재미와 뿌듯함을 느끼게 되네요.
I heard you are even in a horror movie Horror Stories 2; that is a genre where you have to scream a lot.
The director was surprised to hear my scream. How can you scream so loudly! Hahaha. Actually, the hard part was not about my vocal chords, but it was in not getting enough sleep. I had only ever heard about killer schedules (super busy schedules), so it was really hard when I actually experienced it. I survived with praying every day, in retrospect, I can find some fun factors and sense of pride from those experiences.

체력뿐 아니라 정신적으로도 적응하기 어려운 일정이었겠어요.
아무래도 한 가지에 몰입하는 게 아니라 계속 다른 환경에 집중해야 하는 상황에 익숙지 않았으니까요. 그리고 광고 촬영 같은 경우는 제 캐릭터에 맞는 애드리브를 요구하셨는데, 사실 저는 의외로 대본에 충실한 스타일이라서 그런 기대에 부응하는 것도 쉽지 않았죠. 대사 외우랴, 재미있는 애드리브 고민하랴, 계속 긴장하고 있어야 한다는 부담감이 컸어요.
I guess your schedule was challenging not only physically, but also mentally.
Because I was not used to focusing on multiple things at the same time, rather than doing one thing at a time. In the case of the commercial shoot, I was asked to do an ad-lib that fit my character, but in reality, I like to have scripts, so it was difficult to meet the expectations. Memorizing the script, thinking about funny ad-libs, it was stressful that I had to be on point all the time.

대본이나 연출을 잘 따르는 배우라는 건 [SNL]을 봐도 알겠어요. 소화하는 캐릭터도 많고 수비수, 공격수를 모두 해낸다는 건 주어진 임무에 충실하다는 얘기기도 하니까요. 
프로그램에 합류할 때 제 목표가 그거였어요. ‘최대한 다양함을 소화할 수 있는 배우라는 걸 보여주자.’ 저는 코미디언이 아니라 배우니까 웃기는 것보다는 우선 연기자로서의 역량을 넓히는 거였거든요. 도저히 어울릴 것 같지 않은 야한 역할 말고는 다 할 수 있겠다는 각오를 했죠. 그리고 무대에서는 제가 어떻게 보이는지보다 극이 잘 살아나는 게 궁극의 목표기 때문에 대본을 최대한 믿고 거기에 맞추게 돼요.
When I watch [SNL], I recognize that you follow scripts or direction. You act as a lot of characters and because you do the offense line and then do the defense line, it means you are good at fulfilling your duties.
It was my goal when I joined the program, ‘I will show that I am capable of playing a variety of characters.’ My number one goal was in expanding my acting ability, not in making the audience laugh because I am an actress, not a comedian. I already made up my mind to play anything, except sexy roles which don’t fit me at all. And on the stage, how I look is less important than making the show successful, so I trust the script fully and fit myself to it.

그래도 각오한 것 이상으로 힘든 캐릭터를 만나기도 하잖아요. 
웬만하면 내가 할 수 있을까 의심하지 않는 편인데, 이정희 의원을 연기할 때는 걱정이 많았어요. 이미 (정)명옥 언니가 ‘여의도 텔레토비’에서 그분을 연기하고 있었기 때문에 시청자가 혼란스러울 것도 같았고요. 그래서 아직도 그 장면을 연기하던 순간이 기억이 나요. 객석에서 반응이 올 때의 카타르시스 같은 거요! 으하하하.
But sometimes you encounter a character that is very difficult to play, way over your determination.
I usually don’t doubt myself, but I worried a lot when I played Congresswoman Lee Jung-hee. Jung Myung-ok unni is already acting as her character in ‘Yeouido Teletubbies’, so it may confuse the audience as well. Therefore, I still remember the moment when I acted in the scene. It is like a catharsis when you get a response from the audience! Hahaha.

그렇게 힘든 순간이 오면 누구와 상의하는 편인가요? 
사실 현실의 저는 소심하고 정적인 사람이라서 고민도 혼자 끌어안는 편이에요. 감독님이 격려도 해주시지만, 계속 대본 읽고, 참고할 동영상 보고 혼자 극복하려고 해요. 그리고 아무리 자신이 없어도 생방송이니까 결국 해낼 수밖에 없어요. 사람들이 기다리고 있잖아요.
When you have a hard time, who do you discuss it with?
I just take it upon myself because I am a timid and static person in real life. The director cheers me up, but I try to get over it by myself by just reading the script over and over again and referencing related video clips. And eventually, even if I am not confident, I have to do it because it is a live broadcast. People are waiting.

도망칠 수 없는 상황이 오히려 긍정적으로 작용하는 경우네요. 
그런 압박이 본의 아니게 저를 성장하게 하는 것 같아요. 오늘 화보 촬영도 평소에 전혀 입지 않는 과감한 스타일의 의상이라서 깜짝 놀랐거든요. 하지만 어떻게든 소화해야 하니까 어색해도 입고 촬영했는데 덕분에 새로운 모습을 보여드리게 됐어요. 그런 거죠. 하하하하.
The situation where you can’t run away actually helps in this case.
I think that pressure makes me grow unintentionally. For the pictorial, I was surprised to see this bold clothing that I never wear in real life. But I have to do it anyway, so I wore them even though it made me feel awkward, but because of that, I could show you a different side of myself. Something like that. Hahaha.

[SNL] 새 시즌을 시작하면서 장진 감독이 하차한 것도 일종의 그런 상황이었을 것 같아요. 배우로서의 본인을 발굴해준 담임 선생님 같은 분일 테니까요. 
저뿐 아니라 [SNL] 크루 모두에게 그럴 거예요. 장진 감독님은 우리에게 선생님이 아니라 아빠 같은 존재죠. 그래서 이제 엄마 혼자 프로그램을 이끌어가면 균형이 잘 맞을 수 있을까 걱정을 많이 했어요. 지금도 계속 걱정하고 고민하는 부분이고요.
Director Jang Jin is off from [SNL] this season, so I think it can be a similar situation. He is like a class teacher that found your talent as an actress.
Not only for me, but it is the same for all the [SNL] cast members. Director Jang Jin is like a father to us, rather than a teacher. I worried a lot because if Mother carries the program all by herself, it may tip the balance over. I still worry about that. (It looks like director Jang Jin is called Father and the head writer is called Mother)

심지어 대선 이후에 텔레토비 동산의 주인공이 아예 ‘또’가 되어버린 것도 부담스럽겠다 싶었어요.
텔레토비 동산뿐 아니라 [SNL] 전반에 제가 출연하는 코너가 너무 많아지는 경향이 있었어요. 물론 그 덕분에 제가 성장하고 사랑받고 있지만, 크게 봤을 때 누구라도 배우 한 명에게 편중되는 건 프로그램에 좋은 영향은 아닌 것 같더라고요. 모든 캐릭터가 균형 있게 골고루 인기를 얻는 게 최선의 결과잖아요. 그래서 최여진 씨가 나온 회에서는 좀 쉬어가는 의미로 제 분량이 많이 줄었어요.
I guess it was burdensome for you when Tto became the main character of Teletubbies land right after the presidential election.
Not only for Teletubbies land, but I also think I appear on too many shows on [SNL]. Of course, because of that, I had a chance to grow and be loved, but I think in the big picture, it is not healthy for the show to rely only on one actor. I think the best result is if all of the characters become popular harmoniously. Therefore, when Choi Yeo-jin was on [SNL], I played a smaller part as a little break for me.

스케줄이 워낙 빡빡했으니 여러모로 다행이었겠네요. 
꼭 그렇지도 않은 게 이제는 [SNL]에 출연할 때는 오히려 쉬는 것 같아요. 생방송을 준비하는 과정이나 무대에 오를 때는 물론 긴장도 하고 힘들기도 하지만, 함께 일하는 사람들이 워낙 가족처럼 친밀하니까 집에 있는 것처럼 편안하거든요.
Maybe it is good for you since your schedule is crazy busy.
Well, that is not exactly true anymore because I feel like I am resting when I am on [SNL]. Of course, I am stressed and it is hard when we prepare for the live broadcast and going on the stage, but we are close and care for each other like family members, so I feel like I am at home.

그 가족 구성원에 변화가 좀 생겼잖아요. 배우가 아닌 출연자들과 작업하면서 새롭게 배우는 부분도 있을 것 같아요. 
사실 같은 배우라고는 해도 각자 연기하는 방식이 다르기 때문에 누구라도 새롭게 만나면 배우는 지점이 생겨요. (김)민교 선배님의 눈빛 연기나 (김)원해 선배님이 대사하실 때의 디테일한 호흡 같은 건 눈여겨보는 부분이죠. 신동엽 선배님도 연기를 정말 잘하시는데 능청스러우면서도 고급스럽게 상황을 넘기는 능력이 대단하세요. 그리고 (박)재범 오빠는 연기를 전혀 모르는데도 무대를 두려워하지 않아요. 무대에서도 평소처럼 자유롭게 행동하는데, 그것도 능력이잖아요. 두루두루 잘 잡아내서 응용하려고 해요.
Your family members have changed. I guess you learn something new while acting with non-actors.
Actually, even though we are all actors, we all have different styles of acting, so when I meet a new actor, I learn something. I watch carefully when (Kim) Min-gyo seonbae is expressing his emotions through his eyes or (Kim) Won-hae seonbae’s detailed breathing technique when he speaks.

마치 ‘또’가 연기력을 모으는 과정 같은데, 그 결과물을 보여줄 다른 기회가 기다려질 것 같아요. 
드라마나 영화, 정극을 하고 싶은 마음이 커요. 지금 보여드리는 연기 대부분은 짧은 상황들이니까, 하나의 캐릭터를 꾸준하게 연기하고 싶은 시기가 된 것 같아요. 특히 로맨스 연기는 꼭 해보고 싶어서 기다리는 중이에요.
It looks like playing Tto is a way to accumulate acting skills, I think you are looking forward to having different opportunities to show the result.
I want to act in dramas, movies, and traditional (not funny) dramas. Most of my current acting is for short situations, so I think it is time to play a character continuously. I am especially waiting for a chance to act romantically.

특별히 보여주고 싶은 로맨스의 모습이 있나 봐요? 
뭐든, 사랑에 관한 게 가장 재미있잖아요. 원래 사람과 사랑을 가장 중요하게 여기기도 하고, 연기할 때도 사랑에 관한 표현은 더 재미있게 할 수 있을 것 같아요. 그리고 아마 연애를 못하고 있으니까 연기로라도 좀 활력을 얻을 수 있지 않을까 해서요. 으하하하하.
It seems like you might have a particular romantic style of acting you want to show?
Whatever it is, anything about love is the most interesting thing. I value people and love is very important, also when I act, I will enjoy expressing love. Finally, since I don’t date now, I want to get inspired through acting. Hahaha.

연기 상황이 실제 생활에도 영향을 주는 편인가요?
아무래도 밝은 역할을 하면 감정의 평균치에서 좀 더 밝은 기분을 유지하게 돼요. 연기와 생활을 완벽하게 분리하는 편은 아니라서 괴롭고 슬픈 연기는 잠깐 몰입해도 길게 맡게 되면 많이 힘들 것 같아요. 계속해서 우울한 감정에 집중해야 하니까요.
In your case, do acting circumstances affect your personal life?
As a matter of fact, when I act as a bright character, I maintain an above normal bright mood. I don’t completely separate acting and my personal life, so I think being immersed in agony and sadness on set will give me a hard time because I have to continuously focus on sad emotions.

그렇게 상황에 몰입하면 연기에 대한 모니터를 객관적으로 해줄 사람이 필요하겠네요. 
아무리 그래도 제가 하는 연기에 대해 가장 잘 알고 있는 사람은 저 자신 아닐까요. 그래서 저는 연습할 때도 제 연기를 찍어서 제가 직접 보고 고칠 점을 찾는 편이에요. 본인의 중심과 균형을 잘 지켜야겠군요. 잘하는 건 아닌데, 삶의 균형을 잡기 위해서 노력하는 편이에요. 책을 읽거나 해서 마음을 정화하는 거죠. 힘들 때일수록 더더욱 바른 생활의 패턴을 잡으려고 하고요. 여유로울 때는 놀면서 TV도 보다가, 힘들어지면 세상의 것들을 절제하면서 더 건강하고 정제된 생활을 하려고 해요. 연기적으로도 계속 공부해야 하는데, 요즘 계획을 세운 건 김선아 선배님이나 공효진 선배님의 연기를 보면서 심층 분석하는 거예요. 어릴 때 그분들 연기를 보면서 ‘저렇게 자연스럽게 말하고 살아 있는 것처럼 연기할 수 있다니…’ 하고 충격을 받았거든요. 그리고 남자들뿐 아니라 여자들에게도 인기가 많고 인정받는 배우라는 게 참 좋더라고요.
When you are immersed in that situation, you may need a person to monitor your acting objectively.
Well, I think the person who knows my acting style the best, is myself. So even when I practice, I record my portrayal and see what needs to be changed. I guess I need to maintain my center and balance. I am not that good at that yet, but I try to maintain a life balance. I purify my mind by reading a book or something. When I am in the middle of a hard situation, I try harder to maintain a good living pattern. When I am relaxed, I play around, like I will watch TV; but when I am under a lot of stress, I restrain myself from outside things and try to live healthily and simply. I still need to study acting, recently I plan on studying Kim Seon-ah seonbae or Gong Hyo-jin seonbae and dissect their acting. When I was young, I was shocked to see them, ‘How can they act so naturally and lively.’ In addition, I like them because they are recognized and loved not only by males but also by females.

현실감 있는 배우가 되고 싶은가 봐요. 
그런 것보다는 남자나 여자 모두에게 사랑받고 싶은 거겠죠. 하하하하하. 하지만 확실히 여자로서 어필하는 것보다는 사람으로서 매력 있는 배우가 되고 싶다는 생각은 해요.
It seems like you want to be an actress with a sense of reality.
Well, maybe I want to be loved by both men and women. Hahaha. But I want to be an attractive actress as a person rather than appealing as an attractive woman.

아주 어릴 적부터 스스로 ‘배우가 되기 위해 태어났다’고 생각했다면서요.
자기 암시였던 것 같아요. 기본적으로 제 성향이 긍정적인 데다가 운명론자거든요. 그래서 원하는 게 생기면 일단 이뤄진다고 믿고, 완성의 시기를 여유롭게 보는 편이에요. 그러면 대부분 생각한 시기보다 빨리 이뤄지더라고요. 거기서 오는 뿌듯함 때문에 더 노력하게 되고요. 제가 초등학생 일 때는 춤추는 걸 좋아했고, 중학생일 때는 노래를 불렀고, 고등학생이 되어서는 연기를 했는데, 그때 셋 다 포기하기 싫어서 막연히 떠오른 게 뮤지컬이었어요. 그런데 지금 춤추고, 노래하고, 연기까지 보여드릴 수 있는 방송을 하잖아요. 그리고 머지않은 시기에 뮤지컬에도 출연하려고 준비 중이거든요.
I heard you thought, “I am born to be an actress” since you were young.
I think it was an autosuggestion. Basically, I am a positive person and I believe in destiny. Therefore, if I have something that I want to have, I believe it will happen and I take my time to get it. From my experience, I usually get it even before the target date. It makes me work harder because of the feeling of satisfaction. When I liked dancing when I was in primary school, when I sang in middle school, and when I acted in high school, I didn’t want to give up any of them, so I vaguely thought about doing a musical. Well, now I am on a TV show where I can dance, sing, and act; and I am preparing to be in musical in the near future.

그렇다면 점점 구체적인 목표를 잡게 되는 시기일 것 같은데요. 
에이. 그렇지는 않아요. 목표가 구체적이면 쉽게 실망하거든요.
Then it is time to have concrete future goals.
No, not like that. I will be easily disappointed if the goal is concrete.

하지만 배우로서 [SNL]의 이미지에 묶이지 않고 그 이상의 성취를 얻으려면 계획해야 할 부분이 많을 수밖에 없잖아요. 
사실 [SNL]을 통해 얻은 것이 많아요. 이름을 알린 것뿐 아니라 길에서 여학생들이 알아보고 “욕해줘요!”라고 하기에 “공부나 해 이것들아!” 하고 소릴 질렀는데 막 좋아하더라고요. 박명수 씨 말고, 특히 여자 연예인 중에 이렇게 편한 캐릭터가 어디 있겠어요. 하하하. 하지만 언제까지나 안전한 울타리 안에서 잘하는 것만 하느냐, 불안하겠지만 모험을 통해 나를 시험해보느냐를 놓고 고민하지 않는다면 거짓말이겠죠. 서서히 모험을 즐길 준비를 하고 있는데, [SNL]을 떠나는 것도 아직은 자신이 없어요. 무엇보다 정이 정말 많이 들었거든요.
But if you want to achieve more success as an actress more than the successes you have had from [SNL], I think you have to plan ahead.
Actually, I gained a lot from [SNL]. Not only am I more recognized to the public, but when a group of girls asked me on the street, “Yell at us!” so I yelled at them, “Just study you xxx!” then they really liked it. I am the most comfortable character like Park Myung-soo, especially among female entertainers. Hahaha. However, it would be lying if I said I don’t think about the choices between only doing what I can do well within my comfortable boundary or in trying new characters to test myself, even though it is more unstable. I am preparing to take off and enjoy the adventure, but at the same time, I am not comfortable leaving [SNL]. Above all, I have an emotional attachment to it.

그러게요. 막내 여동생처럼 예쁨을 많이 받았을 텐데 말이죠.
네? 전혀 그렇지 않습니다. 저는 그분들에게 남동생이거든요. 아직도 제 인기를 이해하지 못하셔서 저를 보며 가끔 그러세요. ‘네가, 왜?’ 하하하하하.
I suppose. You were loved as the youngest sister.
What? Not at all. I am a younger brother to them. They still don’t understand my fame and sometimes tell me, “You? Why?” hahaha
