That kiss came out of nowhere yesterday. I really thought my boy Oh-gong was just going to throw Jonathan out the window and that would be the end of him. Secretary Ma’s reaction said it all. I know we have some backtracking coming in this episode, but can they just revel in that kiss for the first 5?

HWAYUGI, A KOREAN ODYSSEY LIVE RECAP: EPISODE 8
OPENING
We open with the little SJ. She is sitting outside by herself and watching some other kids looking at a drone helicopter. The drone falls behind a house and the kids tell him not to go inside because it is a dangerous house. he goes inside. SJ thinks that that scary woman is there.
The boy is inside and has his drone, but he hears some strange sound and then accidentally steps on a picture frame with ahgi and omma. He feels something weird and he doesn’t want to turn around. But then he gets pulled away by SJ. SJ pulls him into the house and puts out her umbrella to block them. He tries to say something, but she covers his mouth. The scary ghost ajumma is there and she is singing and walking around.
J – I don’t exactly remember what happened, but I clearly remember her face. I was timid when I was little.
SJ – No, you were brave, no one talked to me, but you…
MW – That is a beautiful story (giddy). Wine, secretary Ma…
SM – We can’t have wine because OG broke all the glasses.
MW excuses himself.
MW – He broke all the wine glasses?
SM – No, all the glasses.
SJ smiles and starts to think about the kiss. Flashback of OG whispering in her ear…don’t spend a lot of time with him, just leave quickly. Then he disappears.
J – It is amazing that I met you again, it is like a movie
SJ – You like movies.
J – The movie I am making today is about you, your story
SJ – My story?
J – A girl with a strange ability, it is a little fairytale story
SJ – My story is scary.
J – You always said that you had a fairy that would protect you, did he come here?
SJ – yeah, he came, but he is not on the pretty side.
GODS BAR
The winter gods sister (SN) and PK are looking at OG. He is there and he looks crazy. He is talking and chuckling to himself and PK and SN are looking at him concerned. They think he is having some simple fun by himself. OG keeps smiling and looking around. PK and SN thought OG would be angry after the kiss, but he is actually just happy and smitten.
PK goes and talks to OG. PK tells him that the human mind isn’t so easy. First love is different, what if she fell in love with him? PK thinks this could be a problem. PK keeps talking about SJ loving this guy and hiding it from OG and OG lights a fire in his hands. He starts to burn with rage and SN pulls PK away to keep from getting destroyed like a dummy.
MANSION
SJ and Johnathan’s dinner is at an end and SJ says that she has to leave to make her fairy happy. She has to go sooth him because he has a bad temper.
Jonathan and MW start to talk about SJ’s fairy. J thought that the fairy was not real, but it looks like he is a real person. MW says that when the main character meets the prince, the fairy disappears. They shake hands and Johnathan leaves.
Outside SM is talking to SJ about today. SM thinks that it is strange that MW introduced her to a human man. She thinks that if she enjoys this moment then OG will be angry. SJ wants OG to show up because he ruined their happy moment. She thinks back to the kiss and touches her cheeks as if she is flushed. MW is looking at her from the door, though she doesn’t see MW.
Flashback of all the moments from the film reel when they went inside the film. MW thinks that SJ will be haunted by this fairy again and he has to direct her a little more.
OG AND A STUFFED ANIMAL
OG is basically reprimanding this stuffed animal that he gave SJ. He tells it that he isn’t doing what he bought him for and is about to throw it away. But SJ shows up at that point and pulls her stuffed animal away. OG still looks at it like it has seen it’s last days.
Then they start to talk about SJ meeting other people. She shouldn’t. OG says that he has the bracelet, so she should just see him. But SJ tells him that she saw his secret marinade sauce for her!
Flashback to MW telling SJ about the sauce and how OG spent days making it. SJ is incredulous, did OG really make all that sauce to eat her? MW sits and tells her, yes.
Cut back to OG and SJ. He says that it is true he wanted to eat her, but why is she so angry. She should think of him also, he spent so much effort to make the sauce and he didn’t use it. SJ tells him to throw the sauce away then! But OG says for her not to tell him those things. SJ says that she was crying when she saw all that sauce and OG tells her okay, let’s not talk about it. Then the conversation changes to them kissing. SJ is pretty startled and says that she didn’t care about the kiss. Not at all! She cares about the sauce! What is he going to do with it!
OG says that he is going to keep it. He will never throw it away. He is a monster and if it wasn’t for the bracelet the, he would use it. He wants to keep his identity as a monster.
SJ – I thought that maybe without the bracelet, you wouldn’t kill me, but I was wrong. Just keep this precious sauce and let’s not forget our identities.
SJ leaves and OG cringes at what he said. He walks to the sauce and burns them all with magic. Then he goes upstairs.
MW is hiding under the stairs and laughing. He is so happy and will sleep well tonight, ha ha ha.
NEW GHOST MONSTER
Someone is outside and looking at his cell phone. He is envious of the person on the phone on SNS, but he thinks it is okay as well. But then the ghost shows up and starts to tell this person to write a lot of bad things about this restaurant. Like it has cockroaches and bad food and all that.
Cut to SJ’s secretary talking about how this restaurant was really good, but then it got shut down due to online comments. SJ wonders how that can happen and the sec says that it happens these days. Then SJ sees the young monster from the demon shop. He is selling talisman and Buddhist items on the street. They start to talk about the SNS demon then they talk about what he is selling.
One of the items is a bell that rings when you meet your true love, otherwise, it doesn’t make any sound. SHe wants a different color one, the black one, but the demon kid says not to touch that one and pulls it away. Then SJ asks him to tell her more about the SNS monster.
CONDO
SJ is at the condo and is talking to MW and SM about the monster. MW says that he will help her make an SNS account, but SJ wants to know how she can attract a monster on SNS? Usually, she uses her blood. MW tells her that it is all about the number of followers she has.
Cut to MW teaching SJ about how to take a great picture. You need to have this couch and other things in the background and you have to look somewhere as if you don’t care. Richness and bluffing is the most important thing in attracting people. SM brings in all the expensive clothing and shoes and jewelery. MW tells her not to look at the camera, she should look somewhere else and fold her legs – but don’t lay down – also, don’t look too comfortable – don’t look like a man – now you don’t look natural…okay, I’m taking the picture.
MW posts it and tells SM to make everyone in Lucifer follow her account. Montage of everyone following her.
OFFICE
The sec is looking through SJ’s Instagram and has a hard time seeing how that is SJ, she looks so different. But she also has a lot of bad replies and he tells her not to care about that. But SJ tells him that she made it to get bad replies, how can she get more? He tells her that she should make cute pictures that don’t match her age. She does, lol.
WINTER GOD AND BR
They are talking about how SJ knows that OG made the sauce for her and all those things. they talk about this for a little bit and then BR brings up that the Winter god is strong now, that is how he can freeze the bracelet…the winter god agrees kind of, but then BR brings up that SJ shouldn’t have emotions when it involves OG and he brings up the bracelet again. It looks like the winter god is trying to affect the emotions between OG and SJ and put distrust there?
PK, ALICE, AND SJ
They are at the condo and talking about SNS. IT is a pretty cute scene and then SJ leaves.
One of the employees attacked Dokchi and committed suicide? They say that OG should go there. But then MW is yelling in the background. He sees his cow statue and it looks like someone painted black circles on it so it looks like a milking cow. MW is incensed. He approaches OG and says that he will kill him and break his monkey! But then the zombie raises her hands and says that she did it. OJ is the witness and he says that he saw it. OG does a little dance and rests on his monkey statue.
MW thinks this isn’t funny and OG says it is a little joke because the two of them can’t really fight. So it’s a joke right? MW says that OG won this time. But he is really mad. The zombie thinks the milk cow looks cuter and MW says if it is so cute, then can he paint the zombie like that? She says no and runs off. Then OJ says that he can make it all black. MW says, “Am I Wagoo?” and then OJ leaves. MW goes to his statue and starts to tell it not to worry, he will make it even whiter than before!
PK AND ALICE
The octopus is all drunk and is hitting on PK in a car parking lot. She is really trying to cuddle with him and PK is trying to push her away. But then PK spots the paparazzi! They take a photo of them and PK says someone saw them! He starts to chase after them and goes outside.
While outside we see some thug looking people. They say that this is where the girl from the video took the video (girl=zombie) and they wait there for her. Then they see her and say that they will take her and if she recognizes them then they will kill her.
But then PK comes running up and tells the zombie that he is in big trouble! The paparazzi took photos of him and the octopus! They leave to solve this and the thugs think that this situation is weird. How is she alive and hanging out with PK? They decided to tell the VIP that she is still alive and they think that maybe she lost her memory. But they look so creepy and they say this while standing over Alice’s mom’s bed.
SM AND MW
They want to give SJ this fear that she can be eaten at any time by OG. They wonder if she is really afraid of getting eaten though, and MW thinks back to what she said. SJ thought that maybe if they took off the bracelet then maybe he won’t….he won’t…
MW thinks that maybe she was scared of something else. SM wants to know what is scarier than getting eaten and MW says that the human mind is weird. They need to investigate her fear more.
Cut to The sec telling SJ that she should go to the M mart. A lot of the comments are posted from MMart in the morning. So SJ goes to MMart and walks around the isles of the grocery store. She senses something and something is following her. She abandons her cart and pulls out her umbrella. Then she turns and opens it!
COMMERCIAL BREAK
SJ turns and opens her umbrella. But it is only Jonathan. He said that he called her office and the sec told her that she was there. But then Johnathan sees an ajumma and goes up to her.
J – Excuse me, you took my friend’s picture, right?
SJ – You’re the one that left comments on my social network?
They go to sit.
Person – All my life is going to the store and watching kids. Your SNS made me so angry so I just left bad comments.
SJ – Stop leaving bad comments, you have a pretty girl.
Person – I feel ashamed.
Cut to Jonathan and SJ talking. He tells her that whenever he thought about her, she always looked like a person in a fairytale book. They start to talk about SJ’s fairy and SJ says her fairy is bad because it tried to eat her. He says to fight against monsters, she needs energy (cue product placement energy bar, lol).
They leave and go to the garage. OG is there sitting on a car but SJ says that they should just leave and ignore him. But OG makes the cart stop like it is stuck in place and then he makes it move so fast that it drags Johnathan away.
OG goes up to SJ and tells her that he won’t make his sauce anymore and he threw it away. he wants to leave with her. SJ says that she doesn’t want to and says that he can just buy new ingredients and make more sauce. he says that fine, he will just eat that guy with all the new sauce that he will make. She knows that he will do it. OG walks off and gets in his fly ride and leaves. SJ is left crying as she watched him drive off.
CONDO
MW is busy cleaning his cow at home. he has all his cleaning supplies handy. Then OG shows up and gives MW a lot of cleaning supplies and says that he is sorry. MW says, “Buy one get one free? eh? And OG walks off.
Cut to MW talking to OG as he sulks on the couch. OG says that SJ was really bad because SJ and J were talking about him behind his back. He told her he threw away all of the sauce, why is she still angry! MW talks to him about it and OG says that without the bracelet he will be so happy. MW says that he will be happy, but what about her? MW leaves and OG thinks that maybe SJ is really worried about him eating her without the bracelet?
SJ
SJ is also sulking and thinking about whether OG still her or not with some beans…he loves me….he doesn’t love me….he loves me….he doesn’t love me…..
MMART
A worker at MMart is checking his phone. he checks it all day long. Right now he is looking at photos of SJ and then clicks on the secretaries photo. He looks at the secs pictures and thinks the sec looks happy. Oh no! The ghost shows up and says that he should destroy the sec and the guy starts to write all these bad comments about the secretary.
Cut to the secretary in a grocery store. he gets a ping that he has some messages and he starts to check it. But they are all bad messages and then the sec starts to reply to them. Cut to him crying pitifully in the office. OG is there as well and is wondering why the sec os crying. The sec just gets up and hugs OG and cries while hugging him. OG points at the stuffed animal like he is disciplining him.
Cut to OG and the sec talking. The sec starts talking about his SNS and all the bad comments. He thinks that he might be taking advantage of his kid and trying to make her famous or something like that (didn’t understand this part). The sec thinks he is really trash. But OG tells the sec that he shouldn’t be persuaded by those things! He will just go kill that guy!
MW AND SJ
MW tells SJ that OG will disappear when SJ fulfills her destiny. She is not SJ after she fulfills her role and OG won’t care about eating her then. This gives SJ some form of comfort and MW thinks that this should make her happy now. But SJ still looks sad and MW notices. He is contemplative and wants to know why she is still sad.
SJ leaves and SM comes up and they talk about SJ. SM says that it doesn’t look like SJ is happy. WM thinks that SJ is worried about losing her memories and love once OG disappears. Cut to SJ walking out trying to cheer herself up. maybe it is good that it will turn out this way.
SNS MONSTER
the MMart guy is still on the phone and leaving all sorts of comments. His supervisor wants him to stop already and go home, but this guy is obsessed. The SNS monster is right on his shoulder. OG shows up to the MMart and turns off all the lights. He walks the hall and says that he knows he is there so come out. The ghost tells him to go away.
But OG goes nowhere and finds the ghost inside that MMart worker.
They fight, but the ghost whispers in OGs ear that OG will die by the hands of SJ. SJ will kill him. he keeps repeating this. She will kill you. She will kill you. You will be killed by that woman. You will die at the hands of SJ.
COMMERCIAL BREAK
OG is affected by this. But he still breaks the cell phone and the ghost disappears. SJ shows up right at that moment and runs up to OG. She wants to know if OG is okay. Did he say something to him? What did he say?
OG – You will…you like me
SJ – That doesn’t make any sense. That monster only lies…no…never…ever…don’t trust it.
OG – He said you will kill me. You are the only one that can kill me. If you tell me to die then I will die.
SJ – No, never. It won’t happen.
OG – Don’t do that ever. And, don’t leave me alone. Don’t go to some other guy. If you do it again then I will kill myself.
SJ- Okay, while you have this bracelet, it will hurt your mind too much.
OG – Don’t be angry at me, because it really hurts.
SJ – Okay.
OG – I love you, SJ.
SJ – I know.
SCANDAL
The scandal of PK and Alice is all over the internet. SM and MW start to talk about this as they enter Lucifer. MW thinks that a celebrity scandal is fine, they won’t figure out that they are really an octopus and a pig. But they say that it is a really big problem if a human is a monster. He saw a lot of countries crumble because the King was possessed by a bad ghost. Then we see the candidate.
ZOMBIE
the zombie is about to go inside Lucifer and then she sees a car and it’s license plate. SHe pauses in recognition and thinks that she has seen that car before. She takes a few steps toward it and someone says, what are you doing? Zombie turns around and sees the candidate, DS. DS is stunned to see her.
Zombie – Is this your car?
DS – Yes.
Z – Do You know me?
Flashback to DS driving in his car and looking at the cell phone. He hits Z when she was human and her body lies twisted on the ground. DS gets out of the car and covers her face with the kingdom towel.
DS – Do you know me?
Z – I know you…..I saw you on the tv, you are a good person.
DS – Thank you, but I don’t know you.
Z – Ah, maybe it is the wrong plate number because my brain is rotten…(she leaves)
DS – Something must have gone wrong…
SJ MW and the team go to find the demon kid and MW tells SM to chase after him (he ran away when he saw MW).
MW says that Sj is doing better with OG now and S says that is true because she isn’t worried anymore. MW leaves and then SJ sees the black item that she liked earlier. The demon kid dropped it while he was running away.
Cut to the Demon shop. The demon kid realizes that the black thing is missing. The black thing is all about death. It is a death ring for Dementors. It will tell you all the dangerous relationships and it will ring when you meet your fate of death.
The black bell starts to ring. SJ wonders why it is ringing all of a sudden and she looks around. She might think that this is the love ring. She holds the bell out and starts to follow the sound. Then we see that OG is in front of her smiling.
VO – One will kill and one will be killed…then the person can hear the ringing sound.
OG and SJ happily look at each other.

So many product placement ads today which made it extra funny to recap. They thought of some interesting ways to show them, which I appreciate. But I am pretty upset that we didn’t get the direct aftermath of the kiss!!! Why did they cut to some boring meeting between Jonathan and MW? I wanted to see OG whisper in SJ’s ear and destroy all the glasses and disappear in real-time, not hear about it in a flashback. Come on show, you have to give me that at least. I want the aftermath! Not the cutaway!

EPISODE 9 TEXT PREVIEW
OG and SJ – SJ believes that their relationship is fate. Now OG knows that SJ wants to have the life of a normal person. OG is in deep agony when he looks at SJ because her fate changed as a punishment for releasing OG (when she was little).
Meanwhile, a new bookseller monster appears who takes kids souls and locks them in fairytale books. This monster approaches Han-joo’s (SJ’s secretary) neighborhood kids. More importantly, I hope they develop the back story of Oh Gong’s past hurt – would go a long way to helping the audience understand why he is constantly stonewalling Seon-mi why he wants to be seen as selfish and detached when he is clearly able to make sacrifices eg the mermaid tears/illusion.
And I don’t want to see any character die but Ma Wang’s pronouncements seem dire.

Asia is so flipping gorgeous. We need to travel the East some more. We’ve been to Korea, but that’s it. My sister has been to Japan and loved it soooooo much. One of my cousins was an ESL in Korea for a year and traveled all over. She loved Singapore and Hong Kong.

Though I hope it doesn’t happen, I have a sneaky feeling that the story direction might take Oh Gong in the direction of eventually killing Seonmi because they both realise that she’s the sacrifice to prevent the apocalypse.
The emotional and character growth of Oh Gong is to bring him up to the point where he can see killing the one he loves and therefore killing himself in the process (assuming Geumganggo is still in force, though what’s with the new owner??) to save the human world is something he could seriously contemplate. That would resonate with MW’s question if the sacrifice to stop end of the world is OG or Seonmi and OG’s statement that it doesn’t matter if the world blows up, he will rescue Seonmi (so all of the drama later is to make him realise the world matters, not just Seonmi) which he does in burning up the film world. That’s my guess: emotional growth of a monster who starts off being selfish and all and the willing sacrifice of a human whose initial sole goal is survival.

Ahhhhhh! No! That can not happen. Show, please keep them both alive. That is unless she dies and becomes a god (or something else that fits this worlds rules landscape) and her and OG can float off into Sky World together.
I love what you wrote here about his character growth! Perhaps he will sacrifice himself in order to stop the woman he loves from sacrificing herself and that sacrifice, in turn, will send him back to the sky world? Like he will get all the cool points for doing that and him and MW can have a bromance in the skyworld together.
OMG, what if MW sacrifices himself for OG and SJ!!!!! I hadn’t thought of that until just now.
Yup, being a Hong sisters drama, there’s no discounting the spin at the end, maybe MW will do something that throws the gods into a soon and therefore rescue OG and Seonmi.
Maybe that is the act that earns him the final point to be a god??
yep, that’s what i think.. MW will be the one who sacrifices himself, but then he’ll get the reward and be with his love.. happy ending.. ^^

Gotta love Sec Ma. Precious! The thing with this show is that the supporting characters are all so engaging too. Even if you want to have as much TV time for the 2 main characters OG and SJ, you enjoy watching scenes of the others and they are so hilarious!
