#4
MARKET
Cha-young goes to the market and looks at all the food for sale. She walks from stand to stand and looks as if she is trying to smell it all the food available. But she might not be able to.
Joon is following her like a handsome vampire in a button up. He continues to follow her all the way to a restaurant where he watches her from the door as she sits and gets her food and starts to eat it. He still stays watching her as she eats her food and coughs as she eats it all quickly. And apologizes to the chef.
Then she drinks water and leaves. He keeps watching her quietly and secretly as she walks away.
CHOCOLATE STORE
She ends up going to a chocolate store and happily looking at all the chocolate. Joon talks to her then and tells her that he did not expect her to come to a chocolate store. He owns up for following her and says he did it just to make sure she didn’t do anything stupid, like get drunk.
She smiles and sighs and says that she does not know the taste of alcohol. He tells her that she also doesn’t taste chocolate. But she says that she knows the taste of chocolate.
So they sit and she starts to eat the chocolate slowly.
CY – 24 years ago, I was trapped in a collapsed department store. Back then, the ajumma next to me gave me a chocolate. I survived with that chocolate and now, because of chocolate, I survive. That is why I lose my smell and taste, but I also know how this chocolate is and how it smells. I know it.
Joon asks, what happened to that ajumma that gave you chocolate? Cha-young explains that she died after she gave it to me.
Flashback to Kang’s mother telling Joon that she would buy Chocolate for Kang. Tell him that I am going to get it and that after he gets it we can go back to the island together.
Cha-young tells Joon that this woman liked chocolate and bought it for her son. I am sorry, I heard that you lost family there. I should not have told you that. Joon mutters a signal that it is okay.
GRANDMOTHER’S HOUSE
Kang eats dinner alone with his Grandmother at their super long marble table. She asks him if he has ever tried this food before? he says that his mother made it for him.
Grandmother says that this is his fathers favorite food. They continue eating alone.
the maid tells Joon’s mother that Kang is eating with the chairman. The aunt asks, only the two of them?
At dinner, Kang tells his grandmother that he wishes that she leaves the hospital alone. Helping people at the end of their life is also a good thing. Grandfather said that is a meaningful thing to do. When he built the hospice that other chaebols wanted, I think that the hospice should not be closed.
The grandmother keeps eating and menacing music starts to play. The aunt looks on secretly. The grandmother says that the food does not taste good anymore, I should have just eaten outside. Suddenly the mean grandmother is back. But she gives him a piece of kimchi on his spoon as if she loves him a lot.
She keeps complaining in her mouth, but continues to give him kimchi on his spoon so she might be happy with him? It appears that this was Grandmother test? Perhaps to see what kind of person he is? I don’t know. The aunt looks on and then turns her head and closes her eyes as if she knows something.
#5
Joon shows up later, just as Kang is leaving. they start to talk about his mother. Joon ass if he thinks his mother would be proud of him and tells him that his mother wanted to go back to the island after going to the store to buy him chocolate. Then Joon walks away.
1995
The mother tells Joon that Kang will not fight him anymore. He will leave this place. So don’t hate Kang anymore. You aunt was wrong, Kang was right. I should not have come to Seoul.
Joon asks if she is really leaving? The mother says yes and apologizes for the greediness of adults. Because of that, you and Kang suffered too much. I am sorry. Joon asks if Kang knows about it also? She says no, she will tell him. He will be so happy to go back to the island. He had a hard time competing against you.
I will buy Kang a chocolate, can you tell him that after I buy chocolate we can go back to the island?
In the present, Joon thinks about what Cha-young told him about the ajumma that gave her a chocolate. She died after giving her the chocolate.
Meanwhile, Kang sits in his car and thinks about what Joon told him. But he gets it together and drives off.
Inside the mansion, the aunt asks the grandmother what Joon is to her. The grandmother asks her what she means? The aunt starts to talk about Kang and how she brought him from the island and all that.
The grandmother says that she declared that she would give Ko Sung to whatever is better. But the mother says no, Joon is just a tool to you. Just the pacemaker that made Kang stronger. My Joon was used.
The grandmother is all like, look at this piece of something? You have done lost your mind. I made you a queen and you forget yourself.
The aunt snaps right back and tells her that she is not a queen and her husband is not King. The righteous King is Kang’s father. That is why he is your choice from the beginning. But your oldest son is not abonim’s son. Abonim died, not because of his brother betrayal, but because his son is not his son! So that means Joon is not actually the rightful heir to KoSung based on the Grandfathers bloodline.
The grandmother starts to hyperventilate and asks for the maid ajumma. The aunt says that she sent her out, because I had something to talk to you about! She has a seat and tells the grandmother to make her son the heir!
The grandmother gets up and stars to walk away but has some kind of fit or heart attach or something and collapses on the ground. Joon sees all of this and does nothing.
#6
HOSPITAL
Cha-young waited for Kang at the hospital and tells him that she was waiting for him. She thanks him for everything he has done and says that she will leave soon. But she wanted to say goodbye to him. So she nods and tells him to be healthy and live well, then gives him a tiny bow as she leaves.
He runs after her and with a big sigh asks her what dumpling soup, but not dumpling soup, is. Michael asked me but I do not know the answer. You should know it. Michael wanted to know.
Cha-young says that the only thing she can think of is *says a lot of food names*. One of the foods that she said is something that he ate with his grandmother tonight. Kang asks her to make it first and then leave.
So she turns herself around and goes back to the kitchen to make it. He waits with her as she makes it. But he also tells her that he can help, so he takes off his jacket and quickly washes his hand to help out.
He starts to mix the flour with his hands and gets them all crumbly so she has to help him put on his apron. It is a moment where she leans in so closely to him to put his apron on him. In to which I wonder why she couldn’t just go to his back?
But the music starts playing and it is actually a nice moment between them that I have been waiting for since this show started airing. They then settle in and starts to cook food together as the song continues playing.
BIG HOSPITAL
Halmoni is rushed to the hospital and the aunt pretends like she is worried as she runs next to her. Joon is there as well and is still trying to compute that he is not the rightful heir to KoSung and his mother just tried to kill hi Grandmother.
His father runs up and asks, what happened? Joon says he doesn’t know so his father complains that Joon never knows anything and runs off.
KITCHEN
In the small hospital, Cha-young tells Kang that he can wait somewhere else during this part. He says that he will wait there but he will not look at her or make her uncomfortable.
But then he knocks over a lot of pots which distracts her a lot. she is polite enough not to mention it. He walks over to the alcohol and asks if he can drink it. She nods. So he pours a glass for her and gives it to her.
She says that she does not drink while she cooks, so he drinks it. he also asks her if she is going back to Greece when she quits? She does not answer. He apologizes. She asks why?
He says that he misunderstood.
She asks, what?
Then she looks at him but he does not say anything so she ignores it. he starts to say something but she cuts him off and asks if he can just leave the kitchen? it is too uncomfortable to be with you in the same space. When I am done, I will text you.
He agrees and heads out. But before leaving, he gets a call from someone who is at a funeral. it is a girl who is calling her with a country accent. She asks if this is really Kang? I called the hospital but they did not give me the number. I lived next to your house. My uncle, Dong-kyu died.
Kang starts to think about the old sailor who treated him so well. The flashback is all muted blues and greys and looks gorgeous. This woman says that they will bury him tomorrow, he waited for you for so long.
Kang takes off. He leaves his jacket so Cha-young grabs it and runs out.
Cha-young gets to his car but does not have his keys so he turns to go back in. Cha-young gives him his jacket which has the keys in it and tells him that he cannot drive because he drank.
He says he did not drink that much, but he is clearly drunk. He says he has to go to the island. She tells him to take a bus or train or wait until tomorrow. But he says that would be too late.
So she gets into the car in the drivers side. Forget Michaels last wish. She tells him that she will drive him there and will ask for his payment for driving him later. I think she has to go back inside to get her drivers license or something? But maybe she has them on her person.
He looks on and then it fades out.
Fade Out
COMMENTS
Okay, this show is going loony tunes. One great thing is that our couple has finally shared the same space together for longer than 5 seconds. Which showed their amazing smoldering chemistry! Which only makes me upset that they withheld this for 11 episodes. Count them, e-l-e-v-e-n.
Then they throw in some more doom and gloom and ruin it. Can’t they just let this couple make these dumplings and give it to Michael and then hit them with the depressing news? I mean, they made me care about these dumplings and then they hurried off to the island without another word right in the middle of it, what is going to happen to these dumplings now????

You are right. I think this show is more a bimge watch show for me.
Yeah I wonder why this drama so slow but I can’t leave it … this drama like quicksand for me
Yes I am totally the same way as the rest of you. There’s something about this drama that keeps tugging at my heart. I keep rewatching the episodes but only because I love the feeling it gives me. This weird emotional tug that I can’t escape. Kaka, you described it well. It’s a quicksand. I probably can’t rewatch it once the series is done because it’s sooooo slow but for now, I am beyond hooked.
Sorry, but I love this show!!!!!

I love that you love it! It is always great to fall in love with any drama! I am so jealous!
Same! Love it. Tears me up on an emotional level but it was worth it for him to realize finally who she is. Man, waiting for new episodes is hard!!
” I mean, they made me care about these dumplings and then they hurried off to the island without another word right in the middle of it, what is going to happen to these dumplings now???? ”
Precisely right?!! 😛 That was exactly me too, though I love the feel and overall music in this show. This and Crash Landing .. are my feel-good warm and fuzzy dramas for dreary Winter now
Either develop that intimate kitchen scene into something else, or do something about those damn dumplings, for Pete’s sakes! What a waste of food, and wasn’t that ‘not quite Sujebi’ very impt too?
Happy 2020 – many thanks for all the recap efforts!
Author
Yes! The “not sujebi, but sujebi” is supposed to be really important! Hopefully they come back around to it. 🧐
Hi. I might have missed the sujebi reference. What is this all about?? Does it have anything to do with Kang and CY?
I just LOVE this drama! I get so emotional and haven’t cried so much in along time! Yoon Kye Sang is one of my favorites!

That makes me so happy! I love it when people find a drama to love. Completely ignore my ranting about it. 😘
Don’t worry V. Though I love this drama and the feelings it evokes in me, I also want to pull my hair out because the romance is so darn slow. And the sujebi scene had me go crazy too. What’s gonna happen to all the prep work? She’s gonna have to make it all over again. Waste of ingredients and work. And the drivers license thing made me laugh too but it makes sense in episode 12 — yup, they used it as a plot device haha. Anyway, there are many fast paced romance dramas out there so I’m enjoying this slow burn for what it is. I think the slow romance is a reality for a lot of conservative cultures anyway, especially in Asia.
This show and crash landing on you hasme hooked every weekend to the point I rewatch the previous show the night before jumping into a new. I just love their chemistry but it drags too long, it better have a good ending.
