The Ahn Jae-hong (안재홍) interview we planned for last Thursday is finally making its appearance on Bah+Doo. Work started getting the best of us, so we had to curtail a few postings in order to catch up. But now it is the weekend, so we could devote some more of our free time to translations (whoo hoo!).
I love anything I can find out about Ahn Jae-hong and this 3 part Sports Chosun interview really delivers. It is mostly about his movie The King’s Case Note, but it is also sprinkled with how he sees himself as an actor and his road to success. Part I of the interview is below; we will be coming with parts II and parts III as we complete them. They will most likely not come subsequently though (due to the live recap and some other posts we have planned), but they will come! [Interview 1] Ahn Jae-hong “Am I only capable of comical roles? I have a lot of charms to show”
‘임금님의 사건수첩’ 주인공 안재홍이 21일 삼청동의 한 카페에서 스포츠조선과의 인터뷰에 응하고 있다.
On the 21st,The King’s Case Note protagonist, Ahn Jae-hong is having an interview with Sports Chosun at Samg-sung dong.
‘임금님의 사건수첩’은 예리한 추리력의 막무가내 임금 ‘예종'(이선균)과 천재적 기억력의 어리바리 신입사관 ‘이서'(안재홍)가 한양을 뒤흔든 괴소문의 실체를 파헤치기 위해 과학수사를 벌이는 코믹수사활극이다.
The King’s Case Note is a comical, investigational action movie where King Ye-jong (Lee Sun-gyun), a person with a sharp sense of reasoning, and government worker Yiseo an officer with photographic memory but a few screws loose, are conducting a scientific investigation to solve a strange rumor that has shaken the entire city of Han-yang (old name for Seoul)

코미디 영화 ‘임금님의 사건수첩'(문현성 감독, 영화사람 제작)에서 한 번 본 것은 절대 잊지 않는 비상한 재주까지 겸비한 신입 사관 윤이서를 연기한 안재홍. 그는 21일 오후 서울 종로구 삼청동에서 가진 스포츠조선과 인터뷰에서 영화 속 비하인드 에피소드와 근황을 전했다.
Ahn Jae-hong acts as rookie officer Yun Yiseo, who has a photographic memory, in the comedy movie The King’s Case Note. He told us the behind the scenes story of the movie and his whereabouts in an interview with Sports Chosun at Sam-chung dong, Jong-ro gu, Seoul on the afternoon of the 21st.
건국대학교 영화전공 출신 안재홍은 재학시절 출연한 단편영화 ‘구경'(09, 김한결 감독) ‘술술'(10, 김한결 감독)을 통해 배우로 데뷔했고 이후 ‘굿바이 보이'(11, 노홍진 감독) ‘북촌방향'(11, 홍상수 감독) ‘1999, 면회'(13, 김태곤 감독) ‘누구의 딸도 아닌 해원'(13, 홍상수 감독) 등에서 조·단역을 맡으며 차근차근 실력을 쌓았다.
Ahn Jae-hong majored in acting at Konkuk University and debuted as an actor in the short film Gu-kyung (2009, director: Kim Han-kyul) and Sul-Sul (2010, director: Kim Han-kyul). He then continued developing his acting career by taking minor roles in Good bye Boy (2011, director: No Hong-jin), The Day He Arrives (2011, Director: Hong Sang-su), 1999, Visit (2013, director: Kim Tae-gon), and Nobody’s Daughter Haewon (2013, Director: Hong Sang-su)
2014년 개봉한 독립영화 ‘족구왕'(우문기 감독)에서 첫 장편영화 주연을 맡게 된 안재홍은 폭발적인 존재감을 드러내며 단번에 ‘충무로 블루칩’으로 떠올랐고 이후 도전한 tvN 드라마 ‘응답하라 1988’에서 ‘봉블리’ 김정봉 역을 맡아 폭발적인 인기를 얻었다.
In 2014, he had his first main role in an indie film The King of Jokgu (Director: Woo Moon-ki) and became a so-called “blue-chip of Chungmuro (Hollywood of Korea)”, then he exploded with the tvN drama Answer me 1988 with his role as Kim Jung-bong, nickname “Bongbli”.
‘응답하라 1988’로 ‘라이징 스타’가 된 안재홍은 다시 충무로로 돌아와 ‘널 기다리며'(16, 모홍진 감독) ‘위대한 소원'(16, 남대중 감독) ‘굿바이 싱글'(16, 김태곤 감독) ‘범죄의 여왕'(16, 이요섭 감독)으로 관객을 찾았고 올해엔 ‘조작된 도시'(박광현 감독) ‘밤의 해변에서 혼자'(홍상수 감독), 그리고 신작 ‘임금님의 사건수첩’으로 다양한 변신을 시도하고 있다. 현재는 오는 5월 첫 방송을 앞둔 KBS2 월화드라마 ‘쌈, 마이웨이'(임상춘 극본, 이나정 연출) 촬영에 한창이다.
He became a “Rising Star” with Answer me 1988 then he went back to Chungmuro and shot the movies Missing You (2016, Director: Mo Hong-jin), The Last Ride (2016, Director: Lee Yo-sub), Family hood (2016, director: Kim Tae-gon), and The Queen of Crime (2016, director Lee Yo-sub); this year, he tries to take on different roles in movies like Fabricated City (Director: Park Gyang-hyun), On the Beach at Night Alone (Director: Hong Sang-su), and the newest movie, The King’s Case Note. Now he is busy with the new KBS2 Monday-Tuesday drama Fight for My Way (writer: Lim Sang-chun, director: Lee Na-jung)
올 상반기 연달아 세 작품으로 관객을 찾은 안재홍은 “운이 좋아 올해 관객을 자주 찾아뵙게 됐다. ‘조작된 도시’ 같은 경우는 2년 전 촬영했는데 올해 개봉하게 됐는데 ‘임금님의 사건수첩’까지 연달아 개봉하게 될 줄 몰랐다. 시사회 때부터 세 번 정도 봤는데 특히 ‘임금님의 사건수첩’은 긴장하면서 봤다”며 소감을 전했다. 그는 “‘임금님의 사건수첩’은 가장 최근에 찍었던 작품이기도 했고 내가 도전했던 작품 중에 가장 상업적으로 기획된 작품이며 큰 역할을 맡아 잘할 수 있을지에 대한 부담이 컸다. 그래서 유독 다른 작품에 비해 긴장하면서 봤다. 일반 시사회 때 몰래 들어가 관객의 반응을 엿봤는데 다행히 관객의 반응이 좋다. 당시 관객의 연령대가 다양했는데 영화를 모두 즐겨주더라. 안도가 되면서도 기분이 좋았다”고 웃었다.
In the first half of this year, he already appeared in three movies and said, “Maybe because I am lucky, I had many chances to greet the audience this year. We filmed Fabricated City 2 years ago, but I didn’t expect it to open back to back with The King’s Case Note. I watched The King’s Case Note three times, including the trade show, it made me particularly nervous. He then said, The King’s Case Note is the most recent and the most commercial film I have ever done or I have ever been to, it was burdensome to take on such a big role in the film. Therefore, I watched the movie more tensely when compared to my other movies. I sneaked into the trade show with the public and observed the audiences’ reactions, luckily, their reactions were good. There were wide age ranges in the movie theater, and they all seemed to enjoy the movie. It was a big relief and it made me feel good as well.” He laughed.
등장만 해도 웃음이 터지는 전매특허 안재홍의 코미디가 이번에도 정통한 것. 이와 관련해 안재홍은 “처음 ‘임금님의 사건수첩’ 시나리오를 봤을 때 느낀 점은 다양한 장르가 곳곳에 배치되어 있다는 것이었다. 액션, 코미디 등 다양한 재미들이 곳곳에 포진했고 캐릭터들도 좋았다. 특히 내가 연기한 윤이서는 전작에서 보였던 나의 친숙한 이미지에서 시작해 조금 더 다른 모습으로 성장하는 모습으로 끝내길 원했는데 계획대로 된 것 같다”고 고백했다.
Ahn Jae-hong’s trademark comedic acting, which makes the audience laugh just by his presence, worked here again. He said, “When I first read The King’s Case Note script, I thought a variety of genres were imbedded here and there throughout the movie. A variety of fun factors were positioned throughout the movie and the characters were good as well. Especially the character I played, Yun Yi-seo, I wanted to start with a familiar character I have played before, then grow into a different character in the end; I think it worked as planned.”
그의 말대로 그동안 대중에겐 코미디 장르에서 두각을 보였던 안재홍. 일각에서는 배우로서 한 가지 이미지로만 소비되는 게 아니냐는 아쉬움도 있는 상황. 이와 관련해 안재홍은 “나 역시 전작에서 보인 모습들에 ‘임금님의 사건수첩’에도 있어 고민이 됐다. 배우로서 당연히 고민되는 지점이다. 친숙한 안재홍의 모습은 대부분 많은 사람이 기대하는 모습이지 않나? 친숙함으로 시작해 나중에는 조금 더 확장된 모습으로 끝내도 괜찮을 것이라는 판단으로 다시 한번 이 캐릭터를 선택했다. 가능한 한 조급하지 않게 다가가려고 한다. 스스로는 배우로서 보여드릴 수 있는 캐릭터가 아직 많다고 생각한다. 안재홍이란 배우가 성장해 가면서 어떤 변주를 하는지, 어떤 새로운 모습을 보여주는지 천천히, 그리고 충분히 꺼내 보이고 싶다”고 설명했다.
As he said, he was known to the public for his comedic acting. Some people are worried that he is wasting his talent by showing only one image. Ahn Jae-hong talked about this, “I have also thought about it a lot because in The King’s Case Note I have a similar image to my previous roles as well. Of course, it is time to seriously think about it as an actor. Is the familiar image of Ahn Jae-hong what most people expect? I chose this kind of character again because I thought it was good to start with my familiar image and end with a more developed character. I try not to hurry. I believe I have a lot to present as an actor. I want to slowly, but fully show the development of actor Ahn Jae-hong, how he can transform and the kinds of new appearances he can show.” He explained.
이어 “주변에서 ‘코미디로 소비되고 있다’라는 우려를 많이 듣지만 나는 아직 잘 모르겠다. 코미디라는 장르도 결이 다양하다고 생각한다. 어떤 코미디는 밝고 유쾌하고 굉장히 폭넓은 코미디도 있고 어떤 코미디는 독하고 자극적인 코미디도 있다. 또 반면에 따뜻하고 뭉클한 코미디도 있다. 이렇게 다양한 것처럼 나 역시 여러 모습을 가져가고 싶다. 물론 걱정이 왜 없겠느냐. 스스로 소비되지 않으려고 열심히 동력을 일으키는 중이다. 우려처럼 스스로 경계해야 할 부분이고 나 역시 인정하는 대목이다”고 연기 소신을 밝혔다.
He continued explaining his acting principles, “I hear ‘You are wasting your talent with comedy acting’ a lot, but I don’t exactly know yet. There are subtle differences in the comedy genre. Some comedy movies are bright and fun, some give a wide experience, some are very sarcastic. On the other hand, there are touching comedies as well. So, just as the comedy genre has a variety of faces, I also want to have a variety of images. Of course, I worry about it. I motivate myself not to be wasted. Just as others worry, I also have to be careful, and I also have to acknowledge it.”
한편, 허윤미 작가의 동명의 인기 웹툰을 영화화한 ‘임금님의 사건수첩’은 예리한 추리력을 지닌 막무가내 임금 예종과 천재적 기억력을 가진 어리바리 신입 사관 이서가 조선판 과학수사를 통해 한양을 뒤흔든 괴소문의 실체를 파헤치는 유쾌한 활약을 그린 작품이다. 이선균, 안재홍, 김희원, 주진모, 장영남 등이 가세했고 ‘코리아’를 연출한 문현성 감독이 메가폰을 잡았다. 오는 26일 개봉한다.
On the other hand, the movie The King’s Case Note, based on a popular webtoon by artist Heo Yoon-mi, is a comical-investigational-action movie about King Ye-jong, who has a sharp sense of reasoning, and government worker Yiseo, an officer with a photographic memory but a few screws loose, who are conducting scientific investigations to solve a strange rumor that has shaken the entire city of Han-yang (old name for Seoul). It stars Lee Seon-gyun, Ahn Jae-hong, Kim Hee-won, Joo Jin-mo, and Jang Young-nam and is directed by Mun Hyun-sung, who directed “Korea”. It will première on May 26.
