Typecast (verb): To assign (an actor or actress) repeatedly to the same type of role, as a result of the appropriateness of their appearance or previous success in such roles.
Whether you’re someone who likes seeing actors and actresses in familiar roles or prefer them to experiment, I think it’s safe to say typecasting is something that happens often in the entertainment industry. And the Korean entertainment industry is no exception.
Another phrase related to typecasting is “character concept”. Have you been able to pinpoint a consistent character concept when it comes to your favorite Korean actors and actresses? Twitter and Instagram have! Take a look at the memes below and see if you agree.
Accurate! Lee Min-ho must’ve told casting directors he’s not about that middle class life.
Suzy’s roles have consistently taught us not to wait around for these boys 😉
Sometimes the bromances were better than the actual romances.
Why can’t this dude ever have parents???
One Lee never has parents and the other always has powers. Together they are a superhero origin story.
I personally love IU’s “attitude problem” in every role.
A “daesang” is the grand prize in a Korean award show. A singer can win a daesang for music and an actor can win one for a drama. Kim Soo-hyun has six of them. That means the man is so talented, his character concept is “winning”.
But judging by this meme, an alternate character concept could be “tortured”. Tortured King. Tortured PD. Tortured alien. Tortured caretaker. His characters need a hug.
Can we start a GoFundMe and raise money for said therapy? His characters also need hugs.
I feel like all his characters are INFJs.
These screenwriters just don’t want my girl to be happy…
…or my boy.
Although, Ji-soo’s character trajectory is a lesson in perseverance. He finally gets a girl
Let’s just say, in real life his sons are gonna have some competition.
At this point, she’s my mom too.
